The plague disease caused by Yersina pestis is enzootic in populations of fleas carried by ground rodents. Nestorian graves dating to 1338-39 near lake Issyk Kul in Kyrgyzstan have inscriptions referring to a plague and are thought by many epidemiologists to mark the outbreak of the epidemic. Today, people believe the disease started in Asia. Traders from the silk road may have brought the infected fleas to Europe.

The plague had large scale social and economic effects. People abandoned their friends and family, fled cities, and shut themselves off from the world. Funeral rites became perfunctory or stopped altogether, and work ceased being done. The economy underwent abrupt and extreme inflation. Since it was so difficult (and dangerous) to procure goods through trade and to produce them, the prices of both goods produced locally and those imported from afar skyrocketed. The demand for people to work the land was so high that it threatened the manorial holdings. Serfs were no longer tied to one master; if one left the land, another lord would instantly hire them.

The impact on towns and cities was enormous. Cities that were once over-populated were reduced by the thousands. Many small towns were completely wiped out. Cities close to ports were the most effected becasue ships that carried the plague docked there.

Today, if you contracted the plague, modern medicine would easily cure you. However with limited medical knowledge in medieval times, most patients just waited the long. hard road to death. some treatments medieval doctors used were; Vinegar and Water treatment, the patient was washed down with a mixture of vinegar and rose water. Others include bleeding, lancing the buboes and dieting. this painting shows when a doctor bled a patient.

A plague pit is the informal term used to refer to mass graves in which victims of the Black Death were buried. The term is most often used to describe pits located in Great Britain, but can be applied to any place where Bubonic plague victims were buried. Plague pits were used especially often during major plague outbreaks, such as the London epidemic of 1665. During these times, graveyards rapidly filled, and such graves became available only to wealthy people. Parishes became strained; one example, the records of St Bride's Church on Fleet Street during the London 1665 plague, shows typical methods employed by the parishes. This poem shows the difference of people thrown into a pit.
