Although he didn't refuse the journey or meet a mentor, he did cross the "threshold" and began his traveling. He meets people along the way and learns how to blend in with other people. I guess the obstacle may have been the one whirligig he decided to put in Florida with the hurricanes, and, although he didn't almost die, he saw the little boy experimenting with the tools.
