Mala slapped a security guard with her bloody wrist because he tried to stop her when she was cutting her wrists with a razor blade.

Her Death

Mala met a young Polish inmate. His name was Edek Galinski. He was planning to escape, and he invited Mala to join him. In June 1944, the two of them fled. She was the first woman to escape Auschwitz. The made it to the Slovak border, but they ended up getting caught and sent back to the camp. They both were punished and were sentenced to death by hanging. On their way to the hanging they both committed suicide. Mala took her life with a hidden razor blade. She used it to cut an artery in her wrist. An SS guard that was holding her, attempted to take the razor blade away from her to stop her. In an act of defense Mala slapped the SS guard with her bloody wrist. Mala died on her way to the gallows before they had a chance to execute her.

Mala was sent to Auschwitz on September 15th. While at the camp she did everything in her power to help many other prisoners, and saved many of their lives. Many people said, "camp life did not corrupt her character". Mala risked her life to save others, and she stood strongly against the Germans. Mala never went down without a fight. She was apart of the camp's underground. One of her responsibilities was to assign prisoners that were released from the hospital to various working conditions. She would always try her best to assign the women who were still weak to the lightest amount and types of work possible. In that way she saved so many lives.
