Compare to the man in the water, Achilles is more selfish and shallow because he cannot handle his rage. He is too concerned about his pride that he makes the decision of not only leaving the battle but also destroying the Greece. Contrast to the man in the water, who left the chances of surviving to others, Achilles worries about his own fate and hesitated to go back and fight. He calmly makes the decision of giving up his own life for others to survive. It is an unpredictable tragedy; he does not know his own fate, but he decides to be selfless in that short amount  of time. Compare to other characters in Iliad, he is trying to save strangers he never met before. He criticizes Achilles for his ignorance and is going to join the battle by himself. He puts himself at risk as well. Although Achilles' armor helps Patroclus become unstoppable in the battle in some way, he is still considered brave compare to the greatest Achilles. He seems more arrogant and greedy because he concerns more about his own pride and benefits. Tough Agamemnon is not nearly as strong, he can still put effort towards the combat. In fact, he put himself at the lowest risk and still want to gain the most; this truly separates him and his army. Hector is strong but not arrogant; He is willing to give up his own life in order to protect his family and country. There is similarities between Hector and the man in the water: both of them have different choices, but they all choose the one that is going to cost their lives. They made the brave decisions. Although Hector is responsible and caring, he is also illustrated as impulsive later in the book.
