Visual Appeal and Aesthetic

For the visual appeal and aesthetic of the site I would prefer sites that are simple and modern design. Even if it’s not modern, a simple visual appeal is good. Having a consistent color scheme is also important so the visual appeal of the site doesn’t get too chaotic or messy with multiple/random colors. The color scheme also shouldn’t have too many colors for this reason. I like a good amount of white space and picture to text ratio on the home page. A good amount would be a bit more image heavy than text heavy especially for the front page depending on the site's purpose because I find it more visually appealing. As for the tone and feel the website should feel comfortable and easy to look at. A good amount of white space allows for a neat look and everything shouldn’t look crowded to avoid poor legibility.

To the right I have my positive example. I like the color scheme of this site. It has a clear blue and white color scheme that’s consistent throughout. They also include a variety of images on the home page and it’s not too text heavy. To the left is a picture of my negative example. The color scheme is unclear to me and it looks outdated and more cluttered at the top with many words.

Organization & Ease of Navigation

For the organization and ease of navigation. I think the site would have a simple interface. Everything should be organized in different categories and easy to find. I think the search bar being generally at the top of the page (if the site has one) would be a good placement because that’s where viewers would generally look at eye level and would be easy to find because of this. A side menu/bar that opens out would be helpful as well because I’m able to close the bar if it feels too crowded with the main content on the page. For ease of navigation I think that having content/buttons labeled would be helpful for the viewers to know where to click. Adding on to this, good typography would make the site look more organized and legible as well. For example, a clear bold font for titles and simple fonts would look more organized than a detailed one.

The positive example of this would be the site to the right.

I like the easy flow of the layout. It's straightforward and has easy navigation and has a bar on the side to look through categories and a search bar on the top. My negative example is the picture on the left. The site does have a search option but it is not clear on where to look for it on the front page. I would have access to search though clicking on one of the buttons on the left of the website.

Integration of Audio, Video, Social Media, and Text

Websites that integrate various integrations of audio, video, social media, and text are appealing. A good balance of each of these integrations would be good for a website. Depending on the website, the integration of social media would be unnecessary for websites that are more information based. I think websites that have at least one or two of these integrations would be nice. For the integration of audio, I would say it could be a good tool in aiding with educational and informational text. I would say the same thing for videos as well because if the site is just videos or majority videos, it would feel overwhelming. When viewing a website I do think social media could be helpful but it should not distract from the overall purpose of the site. Having a variety of integration overall helps the viewer choose their preference on how they want to view information.

To my right is my positive example, Reddit has his website has a good integration of many medias like audio, video, social media, and text. The negative example is the photo on the left because it lacks an integration of certain media like videos or audio to help viewers who are more of a visual or auditory learner.

Accessibility of Information: Ads, Paywalls & Subscription

The accessibility of information of websites that have too many ads are not preferred because it would look too crowded and chaotic. Fewer ads would make the site look better and more organized. The size of the ad should be small as well to not distract from the overall content of the page. Websites like those are not preferable because it shows that they care more about their own revenue than their audience. For paywalls, I think the site should have close to none especially if most of the articles or information will pop up a paywall every time a viewer may click on a feature they want to see. I favor websites that have a subscription for people who want to pay for perks like personalization, access to certain exclusive features, or just easier convenience. However, I think subscriptions for websites should not limit the majority of the website’s content because most of the website would be limited to only people who have the funds to subscribe.

The link on the right is my positive example because the site has no paywalls or visible ads. To the left is my negative example because many articles require subscriptions and often pop up paywalls.

Use of Hyperlinks in Text

The use of hyperlinks on websites should be neat and clear to where it’s directing the user of the site to. Neat hyperlinks would fit the design of the site and have a consistent style. A bad example of what I like to see is a label that says “click here”. A hyperlink like this is not favorable because click here is not descriptive enough and the hyperlink should be named to where specifically it's going to take the user. For images that have hyperlinks, it would be good for them to have a label or indication that it is a hyperlink as well because it would be quite shocking to click on an image to be taken to a different website or another page on the website. Hyperlinks that have a glowing indication is a nice example for image hyperlinks because a viewer would be able to tell if it’s a hyperlink or not.

To the right is the positive example I provided because the site has a consistent style of how they integrate hyperlinks. The image on the left is my negative example because the site does not have a consistent style of how they use hyperlinks they have different colors and different sized typography.

Style of Writing & Positioning of the Content Creators

The style and positioning of content creators on a website should depend on what the website offers, their audience, and their goal or purpose. For educational websites I would like to see more of a language/style of writing that is professional and clear. Websites for entertainment should have an entertaining and engaging language for audiences to feel engaged and comfortable with interacting with the website such as commenting or posting features. For the positioning of content creators I would like to see how they fit into the overall purpose of the site. Some informational websites would position creators more of a resource for credibility, while other websites that allow anyone and everyone to be a creator would position themselves more in a community way. I think the websites that use content creators as a credible source should position the creators in an obvious way to earn the audience’s trust and to prevent the viewers to question where the source came from.

The link on the right is a positive example because the site is meant for accessing information or as a resource for subjects that include history, culture, art, etc. Their language is objective and formal so it fits with their purpose and goals. The image on the left is my negative example, Wikipedia’s content is created by many contributors which can not be a reliable source even if it gets verified by policies or other users.

Ideal audience: Describe and Identify Their Needs

Websites should clearly demonstrate their ideal audience from the website's goals and purpose. A website’s ideal audience varies in ways so the best way is to see if the site has all identifying information for their audience. Websites should include language and types of content that will fit their audience. The ideal audience for a website should find the website useful and are the ones who will engage with the content the most. Websites will add features that would be suitable for their ideal audience as well as design the website to fit their audience. I like websites who know about how to curate their content around their audiences needs. A website that gives tips on drawing for example could include a feature for video tutorials, written tutorials and links to creators that may help inspire their audience. There’s many more ways websites can identify their users' needs based on who their audience might be in terms of how they market their content by age, gender, and etc.

The link on the right is a positive example of this category because they have a clear way to find recipes based on what ingredients the user is looking for in their cooking. On the left is a negative example because they don't have easy navigation for a shopping page so their ideal audience would have a hard time finding where to shop which is not suitable for their intended audience.

Overall Purpose of the Site

Each element for the website's overall purpose should fall into place easily for the viewers. Websites that seem unclear about their purpose or goals would make me back away from the site and question what the purpose of the website is about. I think every aspect including organization, choices of integrations, like audio, images, text, videos and more should aid in the overall understanding of the site. A big factor in this would also be the design of the site. A website should have a design that fits the purpose of the site because without this it would be confusing to the viewers. I think the overall purpose of their site should engage their target audience and be a trusting and helpful resource for whatever the website is providing whether it’s educational, for general information, or entertainment. Another aspect of how I think the overall purpose of the site should look is how they cater to their audience. Websites should have good functionally as well as good branding because these aspects can help identify what the website's goals are.

To the right is my positive example, the overall purpose of the site is clear and that it’s meant to get information users want to know about certain games. The image on the left is my negative example the purpose of the website is unclear if you have never heard of the site before. It looks more like a magazine website before exploring the website.
