After breaking diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1961, the Eisenhower administration authorized the Central Inteligence Agency or the CIA to plan an invasion of Cuba to overthrow Castro. They recruited Cuban exiles and trained them in Guatemala. After Eisenhower left Kennedy decided to implement the plan. On April 17, 1961, a CIA led force of Cuban exiles attacked Cuba which was called the Bay Of Pigs Invasion. Not only did this fail, but it lead to Cuba not trusting the USA anymore.

During this, Kennedys efforts to maintain communism were badly threatened. In September of 1962 US intelligence found out that the Soviets were building nuclear missile sites in Cuba, apparently trying to protect Castro from another invasion. Major east coast cities would be in range of the missiles once they were completed so Kennedy demanded removal of the missiles. In a dramatic television address he blamed Nikita Khrushchev, the soviet premier, for causing a reckless end to world peace. He also announced a naval quarantine of Cuba so they couldn't finish the projects. After six days when nuclear war seemed extremely possible Khrushchev agreed to honor the blockade and remove the missiles.

Kennedy accepted the new economics of theorist John Maynard Keynes that advocated this to stimulate the economy. Its the governments practice of borrowing money in order to spend more than is received from taxes. Kennedy called for dramatic tax cuts in 1963 to middle class Americans as a way to put more money in the pockets of more people. At this time he increased the taxes of wealthier people. This jump started the tremendous economic growth of the late 1960's.

French business people acquired large rice and rubber plantations and controlled the mineral wealth of the country. Some Vietnamese, especially the wealthier members of the society benefited from the western culture and technology. Many others though were improvised by colonialism. Some rebelled against Frances exploitative rules. Ho Chi Minh became the first most important voice demanding independence for Vietnam. He was born in 1890 and became involved in anti French organizations as a young boy and fled Vietnam in 1912. During his 30 year absence, he constantly thought and wrote about Vietnam and searched for Westerners who would support his plans for Vietnamese independence.

Senator Fulbright's opposition to the war hurt Johnson in congress, and the senator was soon joined by like minded activists who believed that American soldiers were dying in a war that had little to do with American interests. Antiwar advocates sponsored a Stop the Draft week in October 1967, and some draft eligible males burned their draft cards in protests.
