Why Topic Was Chosen

The reason we chose this topic was because we're both passionate about the environment, and the rise of fast fashion coincides with the sped up pollution and global warming of the Earth. We chose this topic because it's one that can use data to answer our questions about it. I never shop at these websites, or in fast fashion (at least I try not to) but it's become extremely prevalent on social media because it's cheaper and often just as fashionable.
We will be doing an observational study with data and statistics from reputable and reliable sources.

Analysis

Pro: They use sources to cite how things have changed, and use statistics to prove the point they are trying to make. According to The Elm, they lead the reader to come to the same conclusion, that TikTok has changed the rate of fashions and include the time frame. The Shift clearly brings us to the same conclusion, that people have bought more clothes since engaging with TikTok. Earth.org does the same, with their graph. It shows how clothing sales has gone up while amount worn has gone down, which leads us to the conclusion that fast fashion has increased the waste of clothing, even more in the years of social media. In academy4sc.org, they bring up statistics from the company "Reformation", which is carbon neutral, pays 95% of their employees fairly, and doesn't use plastic packaging. This supports our claim that an increase of consciousness in the environment benefits a company and employees.

Counter: However, the statistics from academy4sc.org also work to disprove our claim, because there are companies working to be more eco-friendly.
The statistics from CNN's website has statistics that mostly support our claim. But there's also one number that says that the second-use clothing business with be twice as big as the fast fashion industry by 2029. This almost proves the opposite of our claim, which shows that the fast fashion industry may be falling. This decline may even be caused by TikTok, by the people on the platform advocating for reusing and upcycling.

Evaluation

For the evaluation, I'm going to evaluate how earth.org can improve their statistics, specifically their first graph.
1) Expand their years. The article was written in 2021, but the graph only goes from 2000 to 2015. This doesn't allow us to see the larger difference over time of TikTok's effect on the statistics and the graph. They should have included all the years up to the publication date.
2) Add more data points. Every study has room for more data points. The larger the sample size of the population, the more accurate any statistics or graphs are.
3) Add more variables. An addition of variables (in the form of other lines), could show different effects that cause changes. Even points to indicate the start of certain social medias and technologically changes like new iPhones and online shopping could help explain the statistics.
4) They also don't have any bar graphs, which mean that the viewer can't see the range of the statistics.
5) Include a Margin of Error. There is no margin of error included for any of the statistics. It doesn't allow me to see how accurate each one is before using it for my research. They should include a margin of error to prove whether their study is accurate or not.
6) Make the x intervals smaller. For their first graph, this site has large intervals of 5 years, which doesn't allow accurate information to be taken from it. It doesn't show the yearly increase either.
7) Make the y intervals smaller. It's 20 billion, which doesn't show the small variations the might occur over time.
