Agree, as shareholder theory states that the only duty of a corporation is to maximize the profits accruing to its shareholders. Fundamentally focussing on stakeholders minimises profits as sacrifices are made to increase stakeholder reception, this in turn limits innovation as there is less capital to invest into new/updated products and services. In addition there is an intrinsic link between shareholders and stakeholders as stakeholder reception heavily effects shareholder value.

in this list 78% of the experts responded saying they either disagreed or strongly disagreed with this statement with weighted responses. This is compared to the 18% that agreed with the statement with weighted responses. Due to this and the arguments presented like from Angus Deaton who says: "Boards controlled by CEO shareholders who enrich themselves at other expenses especially workers." The genuine consensus is to disagree.

Stakeholder theory – would disagree with this statement because stakeholder theory believes we should create value for customers, suppliers, employees, communities, and financiers regardless of if it impacts shareholders. This theory is based on the ‘responsibility principle’ which states that despite a company being its own entity, it should reflect the ethics of a person and strive to ‘do good’ in the world, beyond purely financial gain.

The Shareholder Value myth (Stout)

Stout would not agree with this as she believes that the objective of a company has multiple objectives and each would be aimed to be "sufficiently" met. By placing more emphasis on the wealth to shareholders, this is defeating what she considers the objective of the company. Stout also argues that shareholders are real people with many interests, and most people are pro-social, therefore profits will not be the only thing they care about.

Stakeholder Theory_ Lynn A. Stout

Agrees with it, she believes that orginally for the most of the 20th century comapnies did not have shareholder primacy as a dominent business philosophy. She believes that the idea that corporations should be managed to maximize shareholder value has led the pulicily listed companies to decline by 40%, life expectancy of fortune 500 firms has also plunged from 75 years in the early 20th century to only 15years today. Therefore, she is arguing that a focus on shareholder theory as a dominant business philosophy has inverse effects. She believes that there is no single Shareholder value but infact all sharehollders are human beings and each of us have different interests and values. So in the long run comapnies are better off if they focus on maximising value for all stakeholders (Which inludes shareholders) in order for the company to prosper in the long term.
