1. Living organism are classified according to their basic characteristics.

2. They are classified into seven levels, namely kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species.

3. A kingdom consist of a group of organism sharing certain common characteristics.

4. Kingdom is the largest unit of classification and contains the largest unit of classification and contains the largest number of organisms.

5. It is divided into smaller units called phyla.

6. A phylum is subdivided into classes, a class into orders, an order into families, a family into genera and a genus into species.

7. The number of organisms at each level decreases as we go down along the hierarchy. This is due to an increase in the number of similar features of an organisms.

8. The organisms of a species are very similar to one another. However, they still have individual differences.

9. The naming of organisms or biological nomenclature is based on the Linnaeus binomial system.
