2. Vincent van Gogh developed a style known as post-impressionism which is a term used to describe an artists interest in expressing their emotional and psychological responses to the world through bold colours and expressive, mostly symbolic images. For The Starry Night Vincent exploits the use of composition, colour, line, movement and the fifth is the rhythm of the painting to make the legendary piece known world wide. 

3. This highly thought out style of art developed by Vincent van Gogh makes the viewers feel a certain way and the reason the Starry Night is beloved and treasured by so many has to do with van Gogh's way of touching ones inner emotions and while the negative emotions and experiences that may have originally inspired The Starry Night are evident in this piece, there is also a strong suggestion of hope in the painting with the bright lights and the stars shining down over the dark night landscape.

4. This style of art appeals to me greatly as it's how I want to create my work. I want people to feel a certain way about my work to be inspired, impacted and to understand me just by looking at my work. van Gogh used his exaggerated and expressive brushstrokes to visualise the way he felt inside which revealed his personal feelings about the subjects he painted and ultimately paved the way for expressionism, which is why he's a heavy influence for me.

  • 2. Pop art style mixed with street design. An emphasis on colour and line with distinctive graphics and repeated use of X's on eyes and hands.
  • 3.  Responds very clearly to the rise of loneliness in our society. Much of his work embodies the reminder of the need for companionship and engages on quite an emotional level with people, when they see his work they feel despair, and consolation in the KAWS sculptures, in multiple art works the companions hold or carry one another which can be viewed in many different ways, some see them as a type of hero and in other pieces where the companions are alone they appear despondent, dejected or mortified, it's showing that we as a species need companionship, we need friends and people we love.

    2. Banksy's style can't really be defined as it's impossible to pin down except to say it is vivid visual poetry and is a form of street art painting with aerosol, brushes of various sizes and stencils. 

    3. Banksy has many techniques but isn't erratic instead he/she uses visual styles to place emphasis on the message, not the art itself.
    His "Love is in the air (flower thrower)" painting is reminiscent of images from the 1960s campus and street riots and while there is anger and frustration in the posture and look of the man bombing the establishment with flowers. The flowers themselves are in colour and show a hope for peaceful resolution of our conflicts to wage peace instead of violence and directly addresses the authorities in Banksy's campaign for peace in the city of the conflict ridden area in Jerusalem. 
    All of Banksy's work shocks, provokes, makes us reflect and gossip displaying clear and impactful messages which is why Banksy is so famous.

Another legendary artist that influences and inspires me as Banksy and his style possesses the power to influence positive change and wake people up to the problems of our world and impact society with his/her messages which perfectly align with my keywords especially "inspiration" and "impactful".

    2.  Keith Haring's paintings are part of the general contemporary art movement with his iconic signature style consisting of continuous repetition of stylised shapes in bright, vibrant colours and outlined in black on different media whatever the medium, the line is the key element that defines his style whether that be by using markers, chalk, felt-tip pens etc. the line remains a flowing constant and although Haring's drawings are quite simple and understated, most of the time it gives the impression that the characters are moving due to the lines borrowed from the world of comic books. 
    3. Keith's artwork best buddies is so simple yet so effective and spot on in capturing the concepts of friendship, acceptance, togetherness and one person helping another, when you look at this painting you can feel the power of friendship coming to life.
    All of Haring's work represents characters, objects and animals in a symbolic manner with the designs often telling a story but always eliciting emotion from those who view them. 
    4. Keith Haring is an artist that heavily inspires and influences my style as his art is simple but communicates and reaches out to people making them feel a range of different emotions while also having a message and story behind his work and aligns with all my keywords.

    2. Murakami paints in a superflat style, a term he coined and legitimised within the fine art world, it is described as two-dimensional Japanese animation and is characterised by flat planes of colour and graphic images involving a character style derived from anime and manga.

    3.  Murakami's flowers are inspired by his early studies of Nihonga - traditional Japanese style painting. While his flowers appear whimsical and innocent, what motivated this design was much darker, the artist explained in an interview that the smiling flowers evoked repressed, contradictory emotions and collective trauma of Japanese locals triggered by the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings back in 1945. 

    All of Murakami's work invites viewers to read between the lines and offers a solid pictorial reflection with three levels of understanding.

    The first is the criticism of otaku, the extremist anime fans who inspire Takashi only superficiality and emptiness. This fanatic insanity is exaggerated and mocked through a pictorial work of caricature and distortion.

    The second is the influence of society's consumerist culture and it's products in our personality and behaviour.

    the last level of understanding is the artist achieves an interesting union between "high culture" and the so called "popular" culture : a syncretism that raises the question of the legitimacy of this difference, a subject debated in the world of art today. 


    4. Takashi Murakami's mix of contemporary art and his own made style superflat are styles that greatly influences my own unique style as it is what I am best at and feel most comfortable with also Murakami's expression of psychedelic candor and psychedelic asphyxiating vision is also something I want to do in my art work as I love the beautiful trippy theme of his art work so it's something I have defiantly been motivated to want to try out. 

    It also aligns with my keywords "Creative" and "Expression" as his work is creative and very expressive.

    My design intention for the highly resolved mind map was to focus more on bringing to life the different aspects of my professional identity so the audience can understand what my design intentions are and what I aspire to be through design, along with what and who has influenced and inspirated me along the way.
     
    I’ve creatively illustrated my new mind map as a self portrait of the side of my head showing the inside of my brain representing my origins which spans out to include the other branches of my professional identity, everything that I drew was with purpose to make sure it flowed nicely and was aesthetically pleasing such as including texts inside my hair and brain.
     
    Another addition that I liked the meaning behind was the Eye of Ra positioned above my eye on my forehead, as seen in my 28 collated images section where I displayed my tattoos, this symbol is tattooed on my left triceps and means a lot to me as it represents the sun in Egyptian culture and is a symbol of good luck and creative action, it’s positioned on my forehead as it also represents my third eye which symbolises a state of enlightenment and being “woke” and is associated with out of body experiences, which I myself have experienced that’s given me a new outlook on life that has positively affected me and was the reason why I changed from IT to design as I believe creating art and designing is truly an amazing experience that transcends reality and there’s nothing more powerful than making people happy and to spread love.

    I chose to wear an orange shirt as it’s one of my favorites colours that grabs people’s attention and symbolizes happiness, fascination, determination, and enthusiasm, it’s also known to enhance and symbolize creativity so I thought it would be a perfect choice to include in my professional portrait.
     
    My tattoo “The Eye of Ra” is shown and emphasized as it’s a tattoo that means a lot to me as explained in my item 11 reflection where I included it in my self-map, with it being a symbol of creative action.
     
    On my other hand I am holding an orange pencil to compliment and flow aesthetically with my shirt as well as to also symbolize the things that colour embodies, I’m also wearing a turquoise stone bracelet which is a powerful grounding and protection stone that is said to bring insight and wisdom showing us that we alone are the creators of our own destiny.
     
    Lastly, I used an iPhone 12 to take the photo using the stage light portrait option with exposure set to 65 to emphasize the colour orange more, with my composition being minimalism and space, showing my full frontal face with a low camera angle to make me look more powerful and important, my faces expresses a state of deep thought as well as the positioning of my hands to represent thinking into the future on what to create next, with the direction of my eyes looking upwards off screen symbolizing my characteristic to always think ahead and outside the box, and aim towards the sky.

    My own personal branding logo is shown at the top of my website and again follows the theme of my portrait which displays my Eye of Ra tattoo, for the logo the Eye of Ra can be seen integrated into my logo as this tattoo symbolises creative action and is also a symbol of protection and good luck so incorporating it into my own logo was something I really wanted to do.
     
    I kept the portfolio simple so audiences of all ages are able to navigate it without getting confused or lost, as I’ve seen some professional portfolio websites that are quite hard to navigate through which takes away from the core idea and purpose of the portfolio which is just to showcase your artwork, and provide a means for clients to contact you. 
     
    Lastly some previous work from other design units have been included, most notably my line artwork, which Is a style of art that I love as it looks so beautiful.
     
    Overall I loved this assignment as it really helped me form my professional identity as a designer, before this assignment I felt like I was all over the place with what exactly I wanted to get out of doing design and what my goals and aspirations were, now I feel much more grounded and my vision for what I want to be in the future in the design world has become much clearer.
