The New Deal helped to improve and escape the Great Depression. Government sponsored programs such as Social Security created new lifeboats for United States citizens. Workers rights and wages benefitted from the new regulations and focuses of the time. The depression was partly caused by the lack of consumer market that was enhanced by the inequality of wealth in U.S. culture. As workers reattained jobs and acquired a source of income, they could spend money, and help the encourage the formation of the market. Finally, reforms made to the economy itself prevented another collapse from occurring. Organizations like the SEC, FDIC, and Social Security were formed to help prevent another depression. The FDIC protected money deposited into banks, restoring the trust of citizens and rebuilding banks from the collapse. Social Security acted as a lifeboat, designed with the elderly in mind. Government sponsored money would help to maintain many citizens with enough money to survive and not restart another financial collapse.
