Adams had the courage described to help eradicate European control from the western hemisphere (executed in the Monroe Doctrine which he wrote), lead a disunified Nation out of a precarious dilemma known as the nullification crisis. And like many of those who are self reliant, he was commonly "misunderstood" during his time by many American Citizens especially members of the democratic party led by Andrew Jackson.
