      + According to Starr, this hate manifests itself in society, immediately putting the  oppressed and the hated at a disadvantage and hurting everyone in said community

     + ie. Police likely hate Starr despite her not doing anything, because hatred of those who hurt the police was probably being spread after Starr put officer 115 at risk of being arrested

    • Love: Starr's relationship with her white boyfriend, Chris, is certainly one of love, though they have many issues because of race and all that is going on in Starr's life. 
    • Familial love present in this section of the novel. Starr's relationship with her younger brother Sekani and older half brother seven is extremely close, and on many occasions is the love her parents hold for her demonstrated in their concern for how she is doing and how to get her out of this scenario. 
    • Societal Confines- Starr is black and of the lower class and doesn't experience the same luxuries as her rich friends do at school. Class is a reason of argument as well as causes many problems such as drug dealing. 
    • Prejudice- the prejudice the police officers hold for black people is very obvious, with the questioning of whether Khalil's death was justified because of he was a drug dealer, when it was only assumed in the first place he was a thug because of his race. Struggles between Starr, Chris, and her friends as well. 
    • Villain vs. Victim- the debating idea of whether Khalil or the officer was at fault for this incident and how the people around Khalil are part of it as well after his death. 

    Other Themes:
    • Friendship- Maya and Hailey's relationship with Starr (is it really friendship though) as well as Kenya, Natasha, and Khalil. 
    • Hate- hate crimes, racial hate. Starr feels anger and hatred for whoever put her in this position.

    From these main points, the key focus of this passage is racial prejudice and how that effects the daily life of everyone. 
    • DeVante and Khalil sold drugs because they needed the money for their families, because they were stuck in a poverty cycle derived from a history of discrimination 
    • Starr’s dad is upset at first on how her boyfriend is white
    • In the interview she had, most everything talked about was the officers assumption of danger based on race 
    • She allies with Maya against Hailey because of Hailey’s racist nature and since they are both minorities 

    All of these events in Starr’s life were a result of racial issues and thus that is the focus.

  • Love- Not only on romance, but the book also focuses on familial love. Starr's family is there to support her through the process of defending Khalil. Even though they fight like any other family, it is evident that they love each other. For example, when she has to give the tv interview defending Khalil, Starr's brothers and parents are right there for moral support.
  • Societal Confines - The residents of Garden Heights are under many societal confines due to where they live. They live where there is a lot of drug activity and gang-banging, and it is difficult for escape. The poverty that lies in Garden Heights traps its residents, and people like DeVante are forced to sell drugs and join gangs to survive.
  • Villain vs. Victim - The whole villain vs. victim thing is based on perspective. The black community sees Khalil as the victim and the police officer as the villain because Khalil was unarmed. However other people, such as Hailey and the officer's father see the officer as the victim because they think that the officer was just "defending himself".
  • Prejudice - Khalil's death caused national outrage but not all people are sympathetic of his death because of prejudices. For example,  Hailey doesn't sympathize with Starr when she learns that Starr knew Khalil. She says that Khalil was just a drug dealer, and that "the cops did everyone a favor". She is so prejudiced over the fact that Khalil is a drug dealer that she doesn't take time to consider why Khalil might have turned to a life drugs.

    Societal Confines -     Societal Confines lead Starr into believing races should be with similar races, which continuously causes tension with Chris in their relationship
    Villain vs. Victim     - Iesha is a great example of both. While she is associated with King, she also takes the hit for the kids getting into King’s house after DeVante gets beat up by King
    Prejudice - Hailey uses extreme amounts of prejudice when she says that Khalil would have simply died anyway because he is a drug dealer which is not even true. She also is made  to think that he is a menace because of this, and this is likely due to her prejudice towards blacks.

    • They all get caught in a fire, but manage to escape
    • The book ends with Starr agreeing to rebuild
    The Key Focus at the end of the book is family and community. At Seven’s graduation, Starr’s family and friends from both aspects of her life come together peacefully. Later, at King’s house, Iesha allows her son Seven to escape, put herself up to the wrath of King. Finally, at the protest, the people of Garden Heights come together to protest the injustice of one of their own.
