A school leader needs to exemplify all of the qualities listed below under "LEADER", along with possessing and demonstrating other core qualities of leadership. For example, great leaders are competent, honest, confident, good listeners and communicators, compassionate, share visions, set examples, make decisions, demonstrate and encourage optimism, and inspire others. Sees the big picture. While being task orientated is important, I believe that it is critical for a principal to make decisions that are in the best interest of the broader, more long-term goals of the school and it's students.
2. Views the school as part of the fabric of the community. With increased competition from private schools, we need to make sure that the community sees as an institution that is essential. The principal must set the tone for this.
3. Leads by example. Teachers, parents, and students need to see the principal as someone who works very hard to be a good listener and someone who has everyone's best interests in mind each day. Teachers must know that their principal is working hard for the school if they are expected to do the same.
4. Be present. A great leader is someone who sets out every day to make the best possible decisions, even when they are not the easiest or most obvious. It is someone who can recognize a need, collect pertinent information, and make informed decisions. It is someone who believes in the success of all students and who will look at each student individually to ensure they have opportunities to find success. I believe an essential part of being a school leader is being fully invested in the community where you work. Understanding your community members, their struggles, needs, and how they impact the students living in that community. It's about being a trusted presence in the school and community who is viewed as fair, equitable, and competent.
