At First Italy was divided very heavily between different Independent states until Northern Italy became unified under Camillo di Cavour. While the South was unified under Giuseppe Garibaldi. For the betterment of there country these two came together to unify Italy. They both left there position of power as so one king could rule over all rather than two separate ones. Under the rule of there new king, Italy secured land from France making the country what it is today.

At first Germany was divided into hundreds of states. After the Napoleonic war, The Prussians fought and took the land back from Napoleon. As the rivalry increased between Austria, the Unification of Prussia and Austria became a need more and more. Because of revolts among the people the then king of Prussia appointed Otto von Bismarck who wanted to expand Prussia. As he set war against Austria, certain Northern states in Germany chose sides and split up, but due to the newly unified Italy Prussia beat Austria, then after unifiying the Germans, they attacked France and won land creating Germany.

Otto von Bismarck pushed German unification through "blood and iron" and skillful understanding of realpolitik. As the map of central Europe stood in 1850, Prussia competed with Austria for dominance over a series of small principalities fiercely keen on maintaining their independence and distinctive characteristics. Prussia proper stretched from modern-day Lithuania to central Germany. Prussia also controlled the German lands around the Rhine River in the west. In between, from Denmark to Switzerland, lay small provinces that Bismarck needed to incorporate under the Prussian crown to create a viable German Empire.
