Brandon Barr
An image of Elvis Presley from the 1950's. (image from Rolling Stones).
Elvis was just one of many musicians that began playing the combination of blues and country music that would later be called "rock-n-roll". Elvis became known as "the King" of the music genre and was a sensation among America's youth, especially among teenage girls who would often chase him for the chance to get a piece of his clothing as a souvenir. His gyrating hip movements caused an outcry among older generations who tried to contain the "destructive" influence his music had on the youth. Although they tried, the older generations failed to stop kids from enjoying the new genre of music that provided them an outlet from the conformist lifestyle that many teens felt trapped in.

Andrew Mitchell
Elvis gave off a rebellious attitude as he sang sexually charged music. His music was a mix of blues and country. Older generations were displeased with his progressive influence, things like his gyrating hips were the main source of discontent. This however, made him a big success among younger generations. Teenage girls looked up to Elvis and would try to rip off any piece of loose clothing they could get there hands on. Elvis's impact on society was that not only did he change music, he also promoted equal rights. As a child he would listen to African American music and that is reflected in his music. His music was for everyone and that showed the country everyone is equal.

Dan Willing
Rock-n-roll was originally called rhythm and blues when it was first started by African Americans. It was a phenomenon that took the world by storm during the 1950's. Due to the segregation at the time, record companies were in search for white artists that could encapsulate the sound of the African American rhythm and blues artists. Elvis Presley was the perfect fit, and he took the newly formed genre of rock-n-roll to a new level. Presley's defiant attitude and carnal dance moves sparked outrage with parents across the country. At the time, the US was a predominately Christian nation and rock-and-roll was looked down upon because it went against the values of the time. The parents of the rebellious youth began to call it "Satan's music."

SOURCE: www.rockmusictimeline.com

(IMAGE from Pinterest)

Jessica Zeserman

Cry-Baby is a 1990’s teen musical homage to the rockabilly counter-culture movement in music during the 1950s. Much of the storyline takes place among teenagers divided into the “Squares”, the white, upper class students of the town, and the “Drapes”, the lower class, rock n roll listeners who are deemed delinquents by the rest of the town. This movie is a take on "Romeo and Juliet", showing the differences between the typical upper-class white suburban Squares and the Drapes, who perform rockabilly music, wear tight fitting clothes, and proudly dance similarly to Elvis Presley while in front of Confederate flags.

Paige Neilson
Elvis was a groundbreaking artist in the 1950s. Combining different genres of music, and creating some of the most hated and loved music. With dance moves that shocked and influenced the nation, Elvis expressed himself in ways that people of the time could never imagine. I believe music would not be the same today without the influence of Elvis, and this paved way to allowing artists to express themselves the way they can today. This makes me think about what people of the 1950s would think about kids these days, just because of the very inappropriate music that is produced today.
