In the song I chose, Lose You to Love Me by Selena Gomez, the speaker of the song appears to be Selena herself and the song appears to be directed towards Justin Beiber. While researching, I discovered that this song's occasion is directly related to Gomez and Beiber's break up (Bailey). The subject of this song is also related to the break up and how quickly Beiber became engaged Hailey Baldwin (Bailey). In this song Gomez expresses the pain that Beiber has continued to cause her throughout their on and off relationship. Gomez's purpose for writing this song is that she needed to express her feelings and give one final goodbye. The tone of this piece can be defined as sad yet hopeful.

Selena Gomez acting as the speaker attempts to tell Justin Beiber that he has severely hurt her and he has made many mistakes in their past relationship which resulted in her being damaged. Gomez uses the appeals of Ethos and Logos in the lyrics and the appeals of Ethos and Pathos in the video to get the message across. In analyzing the lyrics and video, it appears that their use of appeals is effective in convincing their intended audience.,

Lyrics analysis: Ethos

ETHOS- Ethos is seen frequently throughout the entire song. The first two lines state "You promised the world and i fell for it/ I put you first and you adored it." Those two lines use the ethos appeal to help show what kind of person Justin Beiber is. Beiber was manipulative and he didn't give as much as he had received from Gomez. The lines " I saw the signs and i ignored it/ Rose-colored glasses all distorted" also use ethos to show Gomez's character. Those lines show that Gomez now realizes that she was blinded by her love for Beiber. When she uses the rose-colored glasses reference it shows how she wasn't seeing the relationship for what it truly was. Gomez tells her listeners that losing Justin was much needed for her emotional health with the lyrics "I needed to lose you to love me." That line is repeated throughout the song and shows that Gomez believes she needed to lose Beiber in order to love herself.

LOGOS- Throughout the song Gomes uses the appeal logos in her lyrics. Inside the second verse the lines state "In two months, you replaced us/ Like it was easy." These lines use logic to explain the subject of the piece if you know the history behind the making of the song; Justin Beiber got engaged to Hailey Baldwin in just two months after Justin and Gomez Split up. Hearing that news was very devastating for Gomez and caused her a lot of pain. Gomez expresses her amount of pain when she states "This dance, it was killing me softly." That line emphasizes how much pain Justin had brought on her. Although Gomez did endure a lot of pain, in the line "And now the chapter is closed and done" shows that the chapter of her life which involved Justin is now in the past. The following line "And now its goodbye, its goodbye for us" helps add to the idea that Gomez and Beiber's relationship is now permanently over.

Within the lyrics, the appeals ethos and logos are used in many ways to show that the break-up was difficult yet necessary for Gomez's mental health. The video along with the lyrics help provoke emotion within the listeners. Overall, Selena is effective in both the lyrics and video in proving that she needed the break-up in order to find and love herself again.
