The first two lines state "You promised the world and i fell for it/ I put you first and you adored it." Those two lines use the ethos appeal to help show what kind of person Justin Beiber is. Beiber was manipulative and he didn't give as much as he had received from Gomez. The lines " I saw the signs and i ignored it/ Rose-colored glasses all distorted" also use ethos to show Gomez's character. Those lines show that Gomez now realizes that she was blinded by her love for Beiber. When she uses the rose-colored glasses reference it shows how she wasn't seeing the relationship for what it truly was. Gomez tells her listeners that losing Justin was much needed for her emotional health with the lyrics "I needed to lose you to love me." Hearing that news was very devastating for Gomez and caused her a lot of pain. Gomez expresses her amount of pain when she states "This dance, it was killing me softly." That line emphasizes how much pain Justin had brought on her. Although Gomez did endure a lot of pain, in the line "And now the chapter is closed and done" shows that the chapter of her life which involved Justin is now in the past.
