They are particularly important for helping students to bypass their areas of weakness and to rely on their areas of competence. Students’ willingness to apply strategies to their classwork and homework is therefore dependent on the extent to which they recognize the value of specific strategies. Students need to understand their own learning profiles and needs as learners and to recognize how and why strategies can help them attain academic success.

1. Strategies are conscious behaviors involving cognitive, social, and affective processes.
Teaching is not an easy work; it demands time, patience, effort, and knowledge. But, even though some teachers have all these components they do not obtain good results with their students.
2. The use of strategies is managed by metacognition.
Cognitive strategies for using the target language help learners bridge “gaps” between what they know and what they want to say, when they are communicating. These strategies are often called “communication strategies” , metacognitive strategies are important is because they develop students’ independence. Many language students do a lot of practice but depend on their teacher to tell them how successful they have been.

3. The amount of attention learners give to the strategies they emply may vary according to different factors.
Students need to understand how they learn and how specific strategies can help them to improve their accuracy and eventual efficiency. Self-awareness is also important because of the increased work time involved initially as students learn new approaches.

Teachers can instruct language learners on the use of stragegies to enhance and facilitate their learning and communication.
The first group of cognitive strategies is used mainly for learning the target language. Look at the two examples described below.
a. Strategies for learning the target language
Rehearsal The rehearsal strategy involves saying or writing something over and over again. Learners often rehearse when they are trying to learn new vocabulary, or when they are preparing to make a phone call or give a talk in the target language.

Metacognitive Strategies

The second category of strategies is called metacognitive strategies. These help language learning indirectly by helping learners to manage and monitor their learning. Metacognitive strategies are essential in successful language learning for three reasons. Firstly, language learners often feel overwhelmed by the amount they have to learn. This can make them lose confidence or motivation. However by using a metacognitive strategy such as planning, students can prioritise their needs and focus on the most important things first. This gives students a sense of control and, by allowing them to focus on one thing at a time, increases their chances of success.
