-Urge for food, comfort and sexual gratification

- It is s self-serving, irrational, impulsive and totally unconscious

-The ID operates on the pleasure principle, seeks to freely express pleasure-seeking urges of all kinds.

- Id acts as energy for the personality. This energy, called libido, flows from the life instincts.

-According to Freud, libido underlies our efforts to survive, as well as our sexual desires and pleasure seeking emotions.

-Thanatos, Freud called the death instinct. Causes discharging tensions relating to sex and aggression.

- Directs energy supplied by the id

-The id can only form mental images of things it desires and the ego has the role of relating these to the real world.

-The ego is guided by the reality principle

-The ego sets standards for the behavior

-It is the system of thinking, planning, and problem solving and deciding.

-It is in conscious control of the personality.

- The superego acts as a judge or censor for the thoughts and actions of the ego

- It is the moral part of personality

-One part of the superego, the conscience, reflects actions for which a person has been punished

-When standards of the conscience have not been met you are punished internally by guilt feelings

-The ego ideal: reflects all behaviors a person’s parents approved of or rewarded

-Ego ideal is a source of goals and aspirations

-The superego acts as an internalized parent to bring behavior under control

-In Freudian terms, a person with a weak superego will have a delinquent, criminal or anti-social personality.

-According to Freud, you feel anxiety when your ego is threatened or overwhelmed.

Freud was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, who created an entirely new approach to the understanding of the human personality. He is regarded as one of the most influential - and controversial - minds of the 20th century

He was born on 6 may 1856 inFreiberg, Moravia. His father was a merchant. The family moved to Leipzig andthen settled in Vienna, where Freud was educated. Freud's family were Jewish

but he was himself non-practising

Pleasure principal- the principle under which the id operates, consisting of a desire for immediate satisfaction of wishes, desires or needs

Psyche- The mind, mental life and personality as a whole

Libido- in Freudian theory, the force, primarily pleasure-orientated, that energises the subparts of personality

Eros- Freud’s name for the life instinct· 

Thanatos- Freud’s name for the death instinct

Ego- in Freudian theory, the executive part of personality that directs rational, realistic behaviour

Reality principal- the principal by which the ego functions, involving delaying action (or pleasure) until it is appropriate

Superego- the judge or censor for the thoughts and actions of the ego
