~Folk Music~

Folk music is a genre that depicts true musical talent. Many of its composers play an instrument with little to no technological alterations or additions. Interestingly, the composers within this genre write about religious affiliations, social cultural issues, and personal experience or issues. This genre separates itself from modern music because it explores different musical and lyrical attributes of music. Nowadays, most music is produced or altered on a computer. There is no human contact while making the music. Human touch and error is what makes music special and original. Folk music's originality is created in the hands of its beholder. Many folk artists play instruments such as guitar, banjo, violin, and piano acoustically or without special effects. The band that best represents this genre and idea is Mumford & Sons. It is quite admirable for them to withhold these roots while playing in a modern world. For these reasons, most people really love or dislike them. I did not like this kind of music until I actually sat down and gave it my full attention.

Being an avid listener of rock, indie, and pop music, exploring this genre was out of my comfort zone. However, after listening to the song, "Lover's Eyes", I found it very easy to find something to connect to and appreciate. For example, the song, "Lover's Eyes, is talking about a relationship that burned out. I found that easy to connect to, because I have been through that situation before. At times, I still find it hard to connect with the instrumentals only because it is not my style of music. Nonetheless, this was a great experience for me and it was good for me to try out new things.

"Little Lion Man" by Mumford & Sons

This song is talking about a man who is not as brave as he once thought he was. After years of "rating and raking" himself, he grew to be anxious and coward-like. The music video exemplifies this idea very well. In the beginning, Mumford & Sons are playing in a dimly lit area for a majority of the song. As soon as the bridge comes in, the band plays with more power and passion, and then the lights begin to brighten up.The lights brighten up because the band is using their courage and passion to make the song stand out. It is a subtle change, but it really made the connection between the performers and the music very strong.

This song was the song I wrote about in my Music report for week 9. Even though it was not my favorite kind of music, I have connected to it and like it. Within my music report, I discussed the musical elements that produced this song as well as the meaning behind it. I really adore how this band writes their music and does not think twice about whether the people are going to like it or not. This music is their own.
