The Lyric 'In an isolated system entropy can only increase' led me to think about how our mental health has been impacted by the Covid-19 Pandemic, especially in our third lockdown where hope seems small and the light at the end of the tunnel has faded once again.

The article states through a months research that the excessive exposure to disaster, in this case the constant news about the Covid-19 pandemic and the tragedies that followed, have caused an increase in depression. A higher social media use = worse mental health

Carys whittaker, previous fitness blogger now turned body positivity influencer. Carys used to create content focused on her body and her fitness lifestyle. That was until 2020 where she realised that it was taking a negative toll on her mental health, having to constantly worry about becoming the smallest version of herself, even though she looked perfect in many peoples' opinions. She has now dedicated her profile to showing that you can be beautiful no matter how you look, and that beauty resides in confidence.

I've chosen to include Carys in my research as she is a great campaigner for body positivity and realness on social media, where she has a promise of doing at least one filter-less post on social media a day to keep her self real and transparent to her followers, instead of hiding behind a beauty filter.

Instagram link here

THEME: Fake

I decided to go with the theme fake because I feel there is a lack of honesty on social media. We want to show people the best parts of our lives, be that engagements, holidays or going out, but the reality is that many people have a lot of struggles that they choose to hide from social media. We want people to see the good parts of us, even tho the reality is that there's a lot more depth to us as people.

Focusing on social media influencers such as the Kardashians and Jenners, we only see the best parts of their lives on e.g. Instagram, where many people following may feel depressed watching people live what seems to be a no-struggle lifestyle.

The Theme Fake connects with my song. My song, being about how we feel isolated can create a further disconnect with people we follow on social media, when we feel alone compared to people who e.g. have been breaking lockdown or gone on holiday during the covid-19 pandemic.

The Problem I would like to solve is the lack of transparency and realness on social media, and how to make social media better for our mental health.

My outcome from my song "The 2nd Law: Isolated System" and my theme "Fake" is to create a documentary.

My idea is to create a documentary focusing on the effects of social media usage on our mental health. The plan is to bring in a group of individuals who will leave all social media platforms for 3 months, to see if their mental health becomes better or worse. After these three months are over, we’ll come back to them 3 months later when they are back to using social media, and see what has happened after they’ve reentered the online world.

In this documentary I also want to draw in interviews with social media influencers, with different online presences (be it fashion models, family bloggers or fitness trainers) and talk to them about if they feel they are completely honest on social media, if they feel like they contribute to the mental health issues online or if they can make a difference with the content they create. I would also like to interview a group of secondary school, six form and university students to see what their perspective is on social media.

We are able to educate ourselves and improve our skillsets via social media, but instead we are destroying ourselves and each other without noticing.
She states that Insecurity, Social currency (Likes in exchange for approval) and FOMO (Fear of missing out) are factors that have grown immensely due to social media among teenagers, and there is a risk that these factors can develop into long-lasting mental health issues.
