Prince Leopold believed that colonization would bring Belgium a reputable name and would allow for economic gain and strength. Joseph Chamberlain knew that the British Isles could not survive without the African colonies because of how it supplied many with jobs. Martial Henri Merlin believed that the "duty" of the Europeans was to modernize these African nations because they were viewed as inferior. The European acquisition of the African colonies happened because of a desire to gain more economically, the need for more jobs, and the entitlement Europeans felt over "inferior" African colonies. It is understandable to say that the African acquisition was a horrible event in which many nations were uprooted from their natural way of life. However, the colonization of these territories helped the middle and lower classes of Europe, and also brought about the modernization of Africa. It is reasonable to say that while African colonization had its pros and cons, ultimately, it had beneficial long-term effects on both sides.
