8th grade Lesson Plans- SMART GOAL

The SMART Goal will decrease the number of disciplinary referrals related to emotional regulation.

The Mindsets and Behaviors match the lesson topic by focusing on social and emotional skills, including friendship, bullying, conflict resolution, and academic skills. These align with ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors such as self-management skills, social skills, and responsible decision-making.

I would additionally include Mindset/Behavior to consider: "Belief in using abilities to their fullest to achieve high-quality results and outcomes". This would encourage students to apply their newly learned skills to improve behavior.

The ASCA Student Standards Pre-Post Assessment Items align by measuring students' understanding and application of social-emotional skills and conflict resolution strategies before and after lessons.

The lesson content /materials match the selected Mindset and Behaviors skills. The 25 minute activity focuses on teaching and practicing social and emotional skills, directly addressing the targeted behaviors.

Timing significantly impacted the results. The consistency of the activities allowed for regular reinforcement of skills contributing to the decrease in weekly discipline referrals.

Modify the lesson plan:

Incorporate culturally responsive teaching strategies to address diverse student population.

Integrate technology or multimedia elements to engage digital-native students.

Develop peer mentoring components to foster student leadership and reinforce skills.

Create personalized goal-setting activities aligned with ASCA Mindset and Behaviors.

These modifications would enhance the lesson pla's effectiveness while aligning with ASCA National Model and addressing unique school contexts.

Core Beliefs:

I believe every student has inherent worth and the capacity for growth and achievement. Students are resilient and can overcome challenges with proper support and guidance. Each student has unique strengths, talents, and learning styles that should be recognized and nurtured. All students can learn and succeed when provided with appropriate resources, encouragement, and opportunities. A growth mindset is crucial; students' abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort, good teaching, and persistence.

School Counselor's Role as an Advocate for Every Student:

Actively work to identify and address barriers to student success, whether academic, social, emotional, or systemic. I will ensure equitable access to educational opportunities and resources for all students, particularly those from underserved populations. I will collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents, and community resources to create a supportive environment for every student. Students will feel empowered to self-advocate and develop self-efficacy skills. The environment will promote policies and practices that support the well-being and academic success of all students.

Ethical Standards Guide the Work of School Counselors:

Providing a framework for decision-making in complex situations.

Ensuring confidentiality and protecting students' privacy rights while balancing safety concerns.

Promoting professional competence and continuous improvement through ongoing education and supervision.

Establishing boundaries in relationships with students, families, and colleagues.

Guiding culturally sensitive and inclusive practices.

Ensuring that interventions and programs are evidence-based and in the best interest of students.

Maintaining integrity and professionalism in all aspects of the counseling role.

Vision Statement:

As a school counselor, I am committed to empowering all students to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive support, advocating for equity and inclusion, and fostering a nurturing school environment. Through ethical practice and collaboration with the school community, I strive to equip students with the skills, confidence, and resources they need to overcome challenges, achieve academic success, and thrive in their personal and future professional lives.

How Competent am I really….

Based on my experience working with our school's counselor and board - I feel I have a good understanding of the basic standards for school counselors. However, looking at my competence assessment some areas I can improve on and gain more knowledge in is Data analysis and program evaluation (the system's program changes often) on how to evaluate student outcomes, program effectiveness, and inform program improvements. Another is Systemic Change- acting as the change agent to create an environment supporting student success.

Overall, areas of strengths include individual and group counseling that apply counseling theories and techniques to promote student development. Collaboration is working effectively with parents, teachers, and administrators. Student-centered approach for maintaining high expectations for all students and focusing on their academic, career, and social emotional development.

Ways to improve my improvements... Data collection and analysis: Gather comprehensive data on student academic achievement, social-emotional well-being, and career readiness. Use tools like surveys, questionnaires, and digital platforms to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. As always, continue to educate myself on all updates on policies and standards with ASCA model and implementing those without the schools system.

The Goal of the Lesson Plan:

The primary goal of the lesson plan is to reduce behavior referrals by helping students understand school behavior expectations and develop self-management and conflict resolution skills. By teaching these skills, the lesson aims to create a more positive and supportive environment, where students can make better choices and manage their behavior effectively.

Challenges in Implementing this Lesson:

Engagement- keeping students engaged in a topic that might be perceived as disciplinary could be challenging. The lesson needs to be interactive and relevant to students experiences to maintain their interest.

Real-Life Application- Encouraging students to apply the learned strategies in real-life situations outside the classroom requires ongoing reinforcement and support from school staff.

Data Collection- Measuring the lesson's effectiveness might be complex, as behavior changes often occur gradually over time. Collecting and analyzing data to assess the impact of the lesson can be time-consuming.
