Johnson & Johnson’s decision to prioritise public safety over financial loss had a profound impact on public perception. By recalling millions of Tylenol bottles at a significant financial cost, the company demonstrated integrity, transparency, and a strong ethical compass. This action reinforced their commitment to consumer wellbeing and helped establish trust at a time when fear and uncertainty were high.

Rather than protect profits or deflect blame, Johnson & Johnson's response showed accountability and moral leadership.

A proactive media strategy in the early stages of the Johnson & Johnson crisis could have accelerated public trust and reduced speculation or panic. By immediately engaging with the media, the company could have controlled the narrative, delivered accurate information, and demonstrated transparency from the outset.

It's hard to say how much a more proactive comms at the start would have influenced this situation. Sometimes communicating for the sake of communicating is not the right approach. It is always more powerful to communicate when there is enough information that will get the results you are after, that is not going to lead to speculation and increase fear instead. Sometimes, silence can be more impactful

The most effective was the warnings issued and the removal of the product from the shelves this showed the public they are aware and will remove all product and destroy before risking more contaminated bottles being sold.

Acting immediately and placing public safety before profits, shows they are taking responsibility and being transparent in their communications, creates trust. Pulling all the products from shelves and then creating access to a helpline, so both the media and customers could ask questions and get consistent messaging back, shows authenticity.

Implementing a proactive strategy regarding the removal of the products from shelves and then providing clear, concise and consistent messaging, the company got ahead of any negative media attention and was able to control the message content. If they had not done this, this would have allowed the media to speculate and create negative messaging, potentially negatively impacting public opinion.

Immediate action, taking ownership of the issue, consistent messaging and implementing a long-term solution all work together to create and build trust with their customers. One without the others, would not have the impact required to rebuild trust and the brand.
