Saba Saleem

The Brookfield Model is a comprehensive and detailed framework designed to promote critical thinking and reflective practice. While its thoroughness allows for a deep exploration of ideas and perspectives, it is often considered time-intensive. Each stage encourages careful consideration of various viewpoints, making it a methodical process that demands significant time and effort. However, this investment allows learners to develop a well-rounded, insightful understanding, making the Brookfield Model valuable in both educational and professional settings for cultivating critical reflection skills.

While it can be challenging due to intense feedback, which maybe emotional , this approach fosters deeper thinking about personal experiences, promoting growth and self-awareness.

Nabila Arshad

The Brookfield model has deep value for reflective work in teaching. However, I think the practical application of it may be difficult to apply consistently, especially during days when we are pressed for time or in the course of every day, being able to invest the required time for proper reflection may get compromised. As far as the critical and analytical thinking aspect of it is concerned, I think it is like a muscle that needs to be developed over time to change from a traditional to reflective teaching methodology.

I think Gibbs' Reflective Cycle is the most challenging because the model requires honest self-reflection, which can be emotionally challenging for many of the teachers.
while reflecting ,we as educators can be influenced by others perspectives.
I also think its a time consuming and comprehensive model. One of the key things about Gibbs is the acknowledgement of the importance of Feelings in reflection. It was designed as a continuous cycle of improvement for a repeated experience.

These lenses correlate to processes of self-reflection, student feedback, peer assessment, and engagements with scholarly literature. The Brookfield Model of Reflection provides the foundation for good teaching and helps you to become an excellent teacher.

Each lens offers a unique insight, demanding a thorough analysis that questions assumptions and deepens understanding, which can be complex but rewarding for personal and professional growth.

I would say for me, the 'Brookfield Model' is the toughest one among the other reflective models because the four stages of this model requires you to reflect not only from your own perspective but also from the other three sources which includes students feedback, insights from your peers and then reflecting it by integrating the literature or research to enhance our own teaching practices. So, basically it is the critical reflection process that not only requires the combination of all four above mentioned lenses but also can be overwhelming and challenging to be fully engaged at times due to the busy teaching schedules.

In my opinion, the Brookfield Model of Reflection is challenging because it looks at experiences from four different viewpoints: what students think, how colleagues see things, the theories we learn, and our own personal experiences. This means you have to think deeply and be aware of your own feelings and thoughts.

Balancing all these perspectives can be tricky. It involves not just reflecting on your own experiences but also considering what others might think. This can be difficult, especially if their views differ from yours.

Putting everything together can feel overwhelming, but it’s important for improving how we teach and learn. While it can be tough, this model encourages us to grow and learn more about ourselves and our practices.

Greetings,

As discussed in class, I would like to express my concerns on Brookfield theory of Reflection.

In Brookfield, all four different lenses (Teacher, students (or others), colleagues, and theoretical literature ) are performed under one lens which can make it more complicated and inflexible. For e.g. If we talk about external feedback from one of the peer teacher then it can divert practitioner (teacher)opinion also which can lead toward literature review which has theoretical emphasis for those who are not more familiar with literature reading . Considering each lens could be time consuming if its used on regular basis, because all four lenses are connected with each other .Balancing or integrating each lens could be more challenging and create more complexity specially for new practitioners.

Gibbs' Reflective Cycle is the most challenging model of reflection as it consist of six stages of cycle and each stage required sufficient data to analyze. Further more, if last stage action plan if it does not work ideally, which off course no plan can, so the whole cycle need to be repeated again. So on practical ground when teacher is already struggling with lots of paper work. its very difficult to follow such a detail reflective cycle.

Ms Nida
