Throughout the play he constantly talks about building a fence around his home to keep everyone together so that even Death can't take them away from each other. Troy and Cory have a rough relationship seeing as Troy doesn't think that football is considered a job in the world. As the story goes on Troy cheats on his wife with a woman names Alberta and has a baby girl named Raynell. After Alberta dies Rose takes care of Raynell but claims that Troy is now a womanless man. Nearing the end of the story Troy is dead and Cory is coming home to go to his father's funeral. He just got back from the marines and claims he doesn't want to go to the funeral of a man who gave him nothing. The day I found out you left I was heart broken. My youngest baby had just up and left without saying where he was going. I was scared when you left everything behind and didn't say when or if you were coming back. Thank God you sent me a letter saying you were in the Marines so I could write to you. I know you feel like Troy didn't love you and only tolerated you because you're his son but deep down you know that's not true. He just has a funny way of showing his love. Raynell is 4 years old and your old room is hers now. She's always asks whose football stuff this is and your father always evades the question. He misses you dearly but his pride is to big for him to say anything. Well I have to go now. I love you very dearly Cory and hope to see you soon.
