The Puritans were the first ever people to migrate and settle in America; they are most commonly known as the Pilgrims. They were super into religion but did not like the ideology of the Catholic Church in England and supported John Calvin's ideas. This was during the reign of Elizabeth and Charles II. After Elizabeth died, Charles II dissolved Parliament and would kill anyone who went against the Church. This caused religious persecution for the Puritans which essentially led them to America in 1620.

The Puritans heavily believed in Calvinism, which is a Christian theological tradition that focuses mainly on God's predestination and the depravity of human beings. Predestination is this thought that you are either an elect or a degenerate, meaning salvation only comes to the elect few and the rest will be shunned or damned. Total depravity meant that all humankind is sinned because of the fall of Adam and Eve. They also believed in "Grace" which is the gift of salvation or the feeling that God is with you in a strong sense. After receiving this gift of grace, you would be reborn with the ability to live uprightly.

The Puritan community set up their system of government to be a theocracy, a government system that blends the Church and the state. They believed it was their mission from God to establish this form of government. This meant that church officials were also government officials. The Puritans believed that their MA colony was made as a Utopia for God to spread his word. This also helped establish education which was formally based on their religions beliefs.

Due to their religious beliefs, the Puritans had a strong sense that Satan was acting in the world. They thought he was the cause for many bad things like natural disasters and disease. They also had this theory that he would recruit witches and wizards to do bad things in the world for him which led to prior witchcraft cases. It was thought that people under the influence of Satan would give off symptoms. Foreign influence was a big thing, including the story of Tituba.

Tituba was a foreign slave who worked for this wealthy family that had two daughters. While she would watch the daughters, she would show them cool tricks and tell them stories. Well soon, the girls started acting strange and showcased disease-like symptoms. When questioned about their weird behavior for witchcraft, they blamed Tituba for influencing her magic upon them. This caused a whole court case to which Tituba admitted to using witchcraft that then led to major hysteria about it.
