         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Galveston Hurricane killed more than 8000 people and bodies were swept out to sea. Over 3600 home were destroyed and the few buildings which survived the impact, were mostly mansions which were built solidly and houses along the Strand district are today maintained as a tourist attractions. <br>After the Galveston Hurricane there was about $30 million of damage, buildings, railways and lots more were destroyed. <br> </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>How did the hazard for</div><div> </div><div>The Galveston Hurricane started as an atmospheric trough (low atmospheric pressure) from West Africa, causing bad weather in the Caribbean and then emerging to Florida as a tropical storm on the 5<sup>th</sup> of September. The people of Galveston didn’t worry about it until the official hurricane warning on the 7<sup>th</sup> of September. The next day, the storm was 15ft (4.6m) and washed over the flat island city which was only 8ft (2.4m) above sea level. Knocking over building and destroying over 3,600 homes which left the survivors homeless.  <br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1900 after the hurricane, Clara Barton who was 78 years old and the found of the America Red Cross responded to the event. 17th of September, Clara Barton arrived with a group of workers. Red Cross provided food and clothing until the Red Cross group left on the 14th of November. There were lots and lots of donations from cities around the United States and several foreign countries. Money came from everywhere, money came from millionaires in New York, from black churches in Georgia and from a little girl in Chicago who sent 10 cents. Donations also came from religious groups, labor and fraternal organisation and thousands of individuals.<br><br>There was a huge meeting the day after the storm, citizens elected a committee to direct recovery efforts, Galveston Mayor Walter C. Jones was named chairman of the Central Relief Committee, state senator R.V. Davidson was secretary of the committee, ship agent W.A. McVitie was chairman of relief services, banker John Sealy was in charge of finances, ship agent Daniel Ripley was placed in charge of hospitals, banker and businessman Morris Lasker was in charge of correspondence.<br><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>
