I envision a school with this habit fully actualized to have great emphasis on taking care of ourselves, providing opportunities to take care of the physical self as well as the mental, emotional and spiritual self. This school would promote a healthy balanced life for students, teachers, staff parents, and leaders. This school would promote the idea that we need to focus on ourselves in order to ensure that we can learn and be leaders.

When I think about this chapter, I envision a principal who takes into account scheduling for teachers. Trying to give teachers a schedule where they have a chance to reboot during the day. For example, I would try to avoid giving a teacher prep first period in an 8 period day and then have them teach 4 in a row, lunch, and then 3 more classes.

Drawing from my specific experience at my district- I would love to have the leaders take the time to discuss what this means to us during our August in-service days. I think it is worth discussing the 4 components- physical, mental, spiritual, and social/emotional. I would like each teacher to have a "toolbox" with these things. Without their toolbox, will they be as effective? I would like there to be a concerted effort for the school to encourage their faculty to "sharpen the saw"

In a school where this habit is utilized, you are at this point displaying all the habits. Your focus now is on self, in order to continue to effectively model good habits for the school community. It is about teaching students to strive for a healthy life. https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fmennosimonschristianschool.ca%2Fuploads%2F66%2Fsharpen%2F1465431600-250w_sharpen.jpg&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fmennosimonschristianschool.ca%2Fabout%2Fschool-news%2Fpost%2Fhabit-7-sharpen-the-saw-effective-christians-have-an-active-prayer-life&docid=j4yARvVfjkZ10M&tbnid=yI1ou1ZdoBlXcM%3A&vet=10ahUKEwj0wIuR_bbVAhUKQyYKHW-mDJwQMwhTKCIwIg..i&w=208&h=243&bih=815&biw=1708&q=sharpen%20the%20saw%20school&ved=0ahUKEwj0wIuR_bbVAhUKQyYKHW-mDJwQMwhTKCIwIg&iact=mrc&uact=8

As a professional in any capacity, it's important to continue to educate ourselves. Much of the focus within the first 6 habits are about growing the minds of our students as its should be, but if we ourselves don't implement this idea where does the path lead us?

I think what is important to note about this habit is that of course we must practice self-care, but in a school that encourages this habit teachers and students would be supporting each other as well. That is to say that we would all look out for each other and be sure that everyone was able to practice this habit. If we notice someone who is out of balance we would find ways to help them sharpen the saw once again.

I used to go to the YMCA a lot when I was a kid. I remember learning a lot of different crafts and playing games outdoors, etc., but what I remember most is how much the counselors went out of their way to see that everyone was happy and ok. And if somebody wasn't ok, we would talk about it. I want schools to be like this too--where we embrace the whole child all the time in body, mind, and spirit. AND, staff members need this too--so many teachers feel unsupported and discouraged. If we make more of an effort to ensure that people are happy at their jobs and feeling fulfilled, everybody benefits, most of all, kids!
