When Kongjwi was born, her mother had died four months later. To cope with the pain her father married another widow. When her father passed away, her new stepmother forced Kongjwi to do all the household chores and gave her ragged clothes.

Eventually her mother gave her a plow and told her to plow the field. While plowing she broke her plow and shed tears.

Suddenly an ox came out and gave her a basket of apples, she offered them to her mother and she believed that she stole them.

The new mayor was hosting a party and invited everyone to the ball, her mother however did not allow her to come.

She told Kongjwi to fill a hangari (large pot that holds water).

She could not do this however and hundreds of sparrows came and helped her fill it up and she was able to go to the ball. A fairy also provided her with a beautiful hanbok that was she was able to wear to the ball.

Kongjwi was so beautiful that the mayor wanted to marry her right away, Kongjwi with the fear of getting caught ran away and dropped her shoe.

The mayor searched around until he could find someone else that could fit the shoe and lived happily until Patjwi killed her to steal her place, until the mayor finds out and kisses Kongjwi in the river to bring her back to life.
