Id: 191-10-1970
I have learned from week 1 about this course : definition of syntax, aspects of syntax.
In linguistics, "syntax" refers to the rules that govern the ways in which words combine to form phrases, clauses, and sentences. The term "syntax" comes from the Greek, meaning "arrange together."

Aspects of the Theory of Syntax is a book on linguistics written by American linguist Noam Chomsky, first published in 1965. In Aspects, Chomsky presented a deeper, more extensive reformulation of transformational generative grammar , a new kind of syntactic theory that he had introduced in the 1950s with the publication of his first book, Syntactic Structures. From a philosophical perspective, it directed mainstream linguistic research away from behaviorism, constructivism, empiricism and structuralism and towards mentalism, nativism, rationalism and generativism, respectively, taking as its main object of study the abstract, inner workings of the human mind related to language acquisition and production.

In first class of second week, I have learned one of the important topic which is called "Complex noun phrase". Here I have read what is noun phrase in basic concept and also known about what is complex noun phrase.
*A noun phrase is a group of two or more words headed by a noun that includes modifiers. For example the, a, of them etc.
*A noun phrase plays an important role in the construction of a sentence.
*In complex noun phrases, multiple nouns can modify the head noun. Example : University staff pension scheme.

In class 2 of second week, I have learned "What is a modifier in a noun phrase".
*A noun phrase is always, either the subject or the object of the verb in a sentence.
*Noun phrases are simply nouns with modifiers.
*It can be include Premodifiers and Postmodifiers.
*Postmodifiers can be prepositional phrases, ing phrases, relative clauses and it can be to infinitives.

So, these are main thing that I have learned in second week.

Thank you.
Shazzadul Hoque Bhuiyan
191-10-2013
46A

Syntax is the arrangement of words and phrases to establish proper sentences. We can consider syntax as the study of sentence and its structure. It is one of the basic components of language. Basically, syntax tells us what goes where in a sentence. We don’t always follow the syntactic rules in the time of speaking. But following the rules of syntax is vital in formal writing. We have to follow a basic formula to write a proper sentence which is Subject + Verb + object. Such as: “Father gives me iPhone 12pro max.” According to Syntax there are four types of sentence structure which are given below:
Simple: Contains a single, independent clause. Such as: I don't like dogs.
Compound: Contains two independent clauses that are joined by a coordinating conjunction. (The most common coordinating conjunctions are: but, or, and, so). Such as: I don't like dogs, and my sister doesn't like cats.
Complex: Contains an independent clause plus one or more dependent clauses. (A dependent clause starts with a subordinating conjunction. Such as: I don't like dogs that bark at me when I go past.
Compound-complex: Contains 3 or more clauses (of which at least two are independent and one is dependent). Such as: I don't like dogs, and my sister doesn't like cats because they make her sneeze.

Actually I am learning a lot of things from every session of this course. From today's session I have learnt some great facts related to writing skill. Two are given bellow :
1) In exams, we really need to notice the marks first while answering any question. Question length should be followed by the marks.
2) We need to understand the question first. Before answering, we have to understand what is wanted in the question and what is the direction.

One thing I want to explore more in future :
1) I would like to explore my thinking ability. Because, due to over complexity in thinking, I miss some facts in exam hall. I need to think normally at first. For example, I messed up with the answer of a grammatical question about "Using post modifiers". If I would think simply, I would be able to answer correctly. That's it.
Thank you.
