In fifth grade, students will continue to work on developing their writing skills and their understanding of the writing process. Students will practice three types of writing throughout the school year: Narrative, Informational and Opinion/Argument. By the end of the year, students will complete writing projects for each type of writing

    In addition to writing, students are expected to read a variety of texts. We will gather information from newspaper articles and textbooks, and analyze works of fiction, that touch on themes such as advocacy, perseverance, family, civil rights and social justice. For example, we read "The Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963" as part of our unit on the Civil Rights Movement.

You will use the problem solving steps to analyze real life word problems, with an emphasis on vocabulary and word meaning. Beginning with place value, we will continue to build on skills learned in earlier grades which will help us to solve problems like converting and applying measurement, used in the exciting fields of  architecture and food service, to name a couple. Maybe you want to own a restaurant someday!  We will prioritize collaboration with all other subject areas to ensure as much practical use of math skills that will be leveraged for the rest of your life! Other concepts and skills you will be learning include multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, estimating and rounding, line plots and graphs, and algebraic use of letters as variables.
