There might have possibly been trails, but no designated roads between cities. The invention of roads was extremely important to not only Rome, but modern day civilizations too. Without Rome's creation of roads, we would not have had roads until much later in history. That would have delayed the production of the automobile. The Romans created a sewage system that had the same basic principle of their aqueducts. With a functioning sewage system, much like the ones that we have today, the Romans could stay clean, and they could not contract diseases carried through human waste.
