Where platoons would shrink in a day or two, to about half the initial size. And Where if someone was injured like your friend, you couldn't stop and save him. You'd have to keep going and let the medics get to them. And even the medics couldn't save anyone, they would save the one's most likely to survive. With that in mind, many were drafted, some not wanting to go but nevertheless having to go. Being stationed somewhere strange and fighting an extreme battle where life isn't guaranteed. Some returned and some didn't.
