Medical and Religious Model

In this episode of the Tv drama, Jackson and April discover their child would born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta type II which is better known as brittle bone disease. This is considered to be a lethal form of the disease and thus the character's baby dies shortly after being born. Here we see the medical model in that some of the doctors wanted to find a cure for the disease with hope that they would be able to cure the baby or at least allow them to live a few days. They saw the baby and the disability as something that they could attempt to fix through medical intervention. Within this example, we also see the religious model in that April does not understand why God is doing this. Not having found any reason as to why, she starts to think that God is punishing her much like some people believe disability is given as a punishment for people's sins.

Works Cited:

Wilder, C.

This Tv series follows a family as they navigate parenthood. Some of the parents deal with emotional issues, infertility, adoption, autism and many more throughout the series. In this case, I chose to follow the story of Max Braverman who is diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome and can be considered to be on the Autism Spectrum. In the early episodes, Max had not been diagnosed but he does display symptoms or characteristics such as not talking, trouble communicating his needs, and controlling his emotions. Once he is diagnosed, the family begins to understand his behavior and find ways to help Max succeed all while keeping the family united. When I first watched this show, this story resonated with me since it reminded me of my own experiences with my sister. Like the Bravermans in the show, at times it was hard to understand my sister's disability and thus it was even harder to find the bests way to help her even if they were not the most conventional ways. I believe that both my experiences with my sister and the storyline that was portrayed in the series follows more of the social model in that they work with the diagnosis they are given and find ways or solutions for these individuals to succeed in everyday life.

Charity/ Tragedy Model

The Teletón is something that takes places in many countries around the world. I am most familiar with those that have taken place here in the United States as well as those in Mexico. A teletón is basically a telethon where we see and hear the stories of children who may have a disability or multiple with the hopes that this will stir emotion in the people watching and that they will donate money. While it can help gather funds for these kids and specific treatment centers, I do believe this displays the tragedy or charity model well. Here, the kids with disabilities are depicted as victims, helpless, and even pitiful. Although the goal is to raise awareness and more so money and this is good, the people in charge of these fundraisers need to pay attention to how they are portraying the people so that it does not dis-enable these individuals or discriminate against them.
