Teachers are responsible for modeling and implementing appropriate scaffolds. Before letting students converse, we had a discussion where we reviewed the expectations for conversations. I even had a brief conversation with a student showing an example of what not to do. Then I gave students a couple of minutes to draw a picture of a hero as they thought about if heroes are born or made. I was impressed with their ability to listen from one another and build upon the conversation. Students have been learning and reading traditional tales, so we took it step further to see if heroes are always fictional characters or if they show up in real life too.
