As an example, I witnessed a group of teachers in my high school discussing reading materials for the grade 12 English courses. One teacher remarked that "The Hate You Give" is a college class text because the students would relate better than the university level students. I was taken aback by the assumption that because they are in the college level, they somehow would in all cases relate to the racism, violence, etc. in the book more.

It is impossible not to have bias - humanity is not great with the concept of neutrality. Personal bias is an inclination toward a way of thinking/ preconceived notion about someone or something. It is unnerving that we form such unconscious biases that we are unable to access through introspection, and that do not necessarily align with our declared beliefs. For example, I love studying American history and foreign policy (thus considering myself very pro-American) and yet I found I had an implicit bias toward Canadians over Americans in the Canada-United States IAT.

Obviously, we are aware that gender, class, and socialized race impact how students are treated (and perhaps how they treat each other) as well as the opportunities they are afforded. I do think that individual teachers can constantly try to look critically at their actions and self-assess whether they are laden with bias. However, it is easier said than done to challenge bias because it occurs not solely on an individual level, but on a systemic one. I think perhaps the best plan of attack is to socialize the next generation of students and teachers to reflect frequently on their own biases and endeavour not to let them dictate their actions.

It is our duty as future educators to be conscious of our biases to ensure that they do not interfere in any way with student success.
