We read Crime and Punishment and a central theme that we got from the novel was that the guilt associated with a crime can be worse than the crime itself, and that “The man who has a conscience suffers whilst acknowledging his sin.” We wanted to find a way to help people alleviate themselves from this guilt and come to a catharsis without embarrassing them or revealing their “crimes”, so to speak.

The following link is to a Google Form where you can type anything that is on your chest- something that you wish to get rid of or prevent from building up inside of you. No one will read what you type, including us. Once we have the responses, we will metaphorically destroy those responses, deleting the Google Form and by printing off the responses and burning them, representing a purging of these guilty feelings. Please type what you feel comfortable typing, and we invite you to maximize your experience and catharsis by typing something that has been weighing on your chest.

Thank you,
Nathan and Violet

In the book Crime and Punishment Raskolnikov is consumed by guilt, failure, paranoia, lust, and anxiety. Often, we as a society shield our faults and insecurities with arrogance. However, this self deception only further traps us in a suffocating mask of our own shortcomings.

Often in our society people cover themselves up to try and hide who they are, what they think, and what they do. They use a cloud of arrogance, unkindness, and cruelty to mask what’s truly underneath- a war going on in their minds. In Crime and Punishment, Raskolnikov demonstrates this very principle. He distances himself and hides himself from society. He distances himself from society to hide himself from the evils he knows he needs to atone for. In our project we demonstrate this very concept, the clothing represents the arrogance he hides behind, using it to distance and seclude himself from society. All of this a facade from the war within his mind, represented by the colors exploding within the walls of his mind.
