"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky is a great book that tells the story of Charlie, a high school freshman. It has a unique style being written as letters from Charlie to someone we don't know. Through these letters, we see Charlie dealing with the difficulties of life like losing his friend, struggling with his emotions and finding his first love.

The way Stephen Chbosky writes is easy to understand and yet keeps such deep sincere meaning in everything charlie says. It feels like Charlie is talking directly to us, which makes us feel close to him and try to connect with his feelings. The captivating story and deep characters Charlie describes in great detail suck you into his world.

Throughout the dense story, Chbosky still finds time to step back and allow readers to immerse themselves fully in Charlie's world, experiencing every moment with him.

Overall, it's a book that peers into what it could be like to be a teenager, dealing with all kinds of stuff, and trying to figure out who we are. It's relatable, touching, and even has some funny moments.

December 19, 1991

Dear Chris,

How are you!? And well I should also ask, how is university? I’m sure you've made many friends and Mom was telling me you had a girlfriend. Is she unconventionally beautiful? On the subject of her did you get a chance to read my report together? Sorry I'm asking so many questions. It's just that you don’t call home or come to visit as often as I would like and I know we weren’t all too close when you did live at home, with Dad and Mom and Candace and I, but I do miss you a lot and wish I had been closer to you. Do you remember those late nights with Aunt Helen spent watching whatever we wanted to on TV. We would always watch Saturday night live and then I’d fall asleep before Candace and you would go on to watch Love Boat and Fantasy Island together. How I wish I had the energy to stay up, just to spend more time with you and Aunt Helen.

Keeping on the subject of TV we all gathered round last night to watch you play! It was the happiest I’ve seen Dad for a while and Mom was crying. Not a sad crying but not entirely a happy crying either. I think she was overthinking everything that could go wrong and got scared for you. You know she’s always been terrified of you getting hurt, so stay safe if not for your team, for her.

Please call soon so we can talk.

Love always, Charlie

My favorite chapter is chapter 1, where we learn about Charlie, being outcast at school after losing his friend Michael to suicide, his brother who has gone to college and plays football and his sister who is a high school senior. Although he's a quiet kid Charlie beats up kids that bully him and doesn't understand why others don't. He gets a C on an essay for 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and his English teacher notices his passion for reading so assigns him more. He sees his sister's boyfriend hit her and keeps it a secret. He also meets two new friends Patrick and Sam and they go to a party where he accidentally gets high on some spiked brownies.

In chapter 1 the author uses visual imagery in "I watched them flying. Doing jumps and having races." The use of the verbs "flying" and “jumping”shows the kids are having fun and creates a sense of freedom and joy. This helps the reader admire the innocence and excitement of childhood which Charlie is noticing in the children.

Later Chbosky uses the metaphor "And in that moment, I swear we were infinite". This shows Charlie and his friends are feeling free by comparing it to the ability to surpass the limitations of time and space.

Chbosky also uses irony in the line, "Sometimes, my dad calls her beautiful, but she cannot hear him." This use of irony highlights the emotional distance between Charlie's parents. This suggests that his Dad is reserved with his emotions, highlighting that there is a lack of communication between his parents.
