Clarifying questions are helpful for the tutee and tutor because any confusion and misconceptions can be addressed upfront rather than a session that was confusing and useless to both a tutee and tutor. When asking clarifying questions such as "in your own words, what does the assignment tell you to do" can help the tutor understand the area of misconception or concern that a tutee might have. If there is a misunderstanding in the requirements then there will be an error in the assignment

Not only is it important to have thought provoking questions to help the tutee think but it's also important to start on a good note with the tutee. As presented in the article you want to ask questions in the beginning that could form a relationship between tutor and tutee.

Asking the right questions as a tutor can determine problem areas and get to know the student as a whole. As a tutor you can understand what a tutor really needs out of the session. You can also predict what the student knows and that can help you on how you should conduct the session.
