"My chest smashes up against Phil. He averts his eyes, but tightens his grip around my back." (81)

- In this part of the book she is on a secret swimming lesson with Phil. Phil has always been Maya's guy that she has always liked and with that she feels as if she is in slow motion. Feeling the rise and fall of his chests, his prune fingers on her back and so on. This would being kind of the rising action because this adds to her love triangle between her and Phil and her and Kareem.

" Kareem gentle hooks his finger under my chin and draws my face towards his. 'But if this where an old Indian movie, I couldn't do this.' he bends down and gently brushes his lips against mine." (59)

-In this part of the book Maya is out on a date with Kareem at the fondue place. They have a great time but find themselves trying to break the basic rules of culture for Indians which is never to kiss or engage in sexual relations until married or with spouse. This relates to the story and the plot by adding compilations to Maya's love life. She can't stop think of Phil but has a peaked interest in Kareem.

"' We should have sent you to boarding school in India. Then you would have learned to be a good daughter, not these ungrateful girls who can't cook and don't know how to show proper respect for their parents. Some even marry white American boys."' (70)

-In this part of the book Maya's mom is giving her this whole run down about boys and proper respect. Maya feels the irony of what her mother is saying and what she is about to do with Phil tomorrow. This is relevant because it shows the guilt that Maya is starting to feel because she knows her mother would be horribly mad at her for it.
