1. Plastic pollution is damaging coral reefs because 8 tons of plastic rubbish enters the world's oceans every year. The plastic is then broken down into micro plastics which are tiny pieces that are mistaken by coral polyp as food and ingested.
2. Ocean acidification happens when carbon dioxide entering the sea water reacts to form carbonic acid, causing an increase in activity.
3. Coral Bleaching occurs when the symbiosis between corals and their symbiotic zooxanthellae breaks down, resulting in the loss of algae and a rapid whitening of the coral.

1. Coral Polyp are tiny, soft-bodied organisms related to sea anemones and jellyfish. They also form the structure of coral reefs which begins when a polyp attaches itself to a rock on the sea floor then divides, or buds into a thousand of clones.
2. A coral reef is a underwater ecosystem characterized by reef building corals.
3. Coral reefs are located in tropical oceans near the equator.

1. Fringing reef- This reef grows near the coastline around islands and continents. This is also the most common type of reef we see.
2. Barrier reef- A barrier reef is parallel with the coastline but is separated by deeper, wider lagoons. At their shallowest point, they can reach the waters surface forming a barrier to navigation. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef and is located in Australia.
3. Atolls- These are rings of coral that create protected lagoons and are usually located in the middle of a sea. Atolls usually form when islands surrounded by fringing reefs sink into the sea or if the sea level rises around them.
4. Patch reef- These are small isolated reefs that grow up from the open bottom of the island platform or continental shelf. A patch reef usually occurs between fringing and barrier reefs.

1. Coral reefs provide a buffer, protecting our coasts from waves, storms and floods.
2. Coral reefs improve the air quality because corals use dissolved carbon dioxide in the ocean water to form new reefs. Without the coral's activity, a gas could saturate the ocean and air mass above it. As a result, there would be a higher CO2 level and that is not good.
3. Coral reefs provide a home for fish and are good for a food web. Without a coral reef larger fish will decline in population because reef fish would not be available as a food source.
4. Coral reefs are good for erosion control. Without coral reefs the ocean's powerful current could easily erode beaches and shorelines.
5. Coral reefs are also good for medicine. Without coral reefs, the flora and fauna for some cancer fighting drugs would not be available.
