Based in Manhattan Beach, Micah Scheinberg is a financial executive and managing director at Alex Brown, a division of Raymond James. Undertaking performance monitoring and risk analysis, Micah Scheinberg provides strategic guidance on asset allocation strategy.

With significant changes to the federal tax laws being enacted, one aspect that remains the same is attaining zero percent taxes on long-term capital gains and qualified dividends. An example is a married couple with two kids who files jointly and earn up to $109,250 in adjusted gross income. After the $25,900 standard deduction is factored in, the couple can have taxable income totaling as much as $83,350 and still be in the zero percent bracket. There are additional strategies for itemizing deductions and bringing taxes for long-term gains and dividends to zero percent for couples who exceed the allowable threshold.

Another tax-advantaged pathway involves sheltering current-year capital gains within current-year capital losses, as well as any capital loss carryover from previous years. This can be used to avoid an onerous tax burden, even among families whose total income passes the allowable threshold.
