This is an incredible opportunity for your child to showcase their business at a real community event.

If your child is unable to attend on the event day, they may partner with a classmate who is attending and work together on a business.

1. Write down 3 problems or hurdles you notice in your home, school, or daily life. These can be small frustrations or things you wish were easier.

2. For each problem, write 1 idea that might help solve it. Be creative — no idea is too silly!

Example:

• Problem: My little brother always loses the TV remote.

• Idea: A remote with a whistle tracker that beeps when you clap your hands twice.

3. Bring your list to class! We’ll share your ideas and explore how inventors turn problems into amazing products.

Parents: Feel free to help your child notice everyday challenges or brainstorm with them. We want to encourage fun, simple ideas to spark creativity and innovation!

For homework, have them brainstorm about their Mission Statement and write a rough draft.

A Mission Statement is a concise explanation of your business's purpose and values.

If you are not participating in the Kidpreneur event you need to have a product or service idea to apply the things we are learning.

If everyone can get set up a little early, you can spend a few minutes doing some pre-shopping at each other's tables! :) Our advertised start time is 10:30 am.

What to bring: You will need to bring any items that you are selling, any promotional materials you want to hand out, all table decorations (you will be provided a table and two chairs per business), signs, and your cash to make change. You may use a cash box, apron, fanny pack, zippered bag, or other way to store your cash. How much money to bring for change is up to you. I would suggest looking at the cost of your goods/services and decide from there. I highly suggest bringing more 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s than you think you might need. If you are set up to take digital or credit card payments, you are welcome to do that as well, but it is not required! We are reminding our customers to bring plenty of cash for purchases. You might want to bring a calculator, pen, and notepad as well to keep track of your sales. 

Photos:  we will have someone there taking pictures of the business fair and our Kidpreneurs. The Science Spectrum staff will be taking pictures as well. Some of these will be used for marketing purposes for future events. I will also try to share some of them on our Facebook page for you to have access to as well. If you post any pictures of your own from the event (and please do!), tag us if you would! 

Please note: if you have opted out of the photo release, we will ask our photographer not to take pictures of your Kidpreneur and we will check all photos that we use before posting. However, we cannot monitor the photos that our customers take and share. Thank you for understanding.

Snacks/Lunch:  we will not be having lunch provided for our Kidpreneurs on Saturday. I encourage everyone to eat a good, filling breakfast before you come, and then you can also bring snacks or food that can easily be eaten or snacked on in between customers without being too messy. 

Shirts:  We plan to distribute the t-shirts at check-in. The kids are not required to wear them at the fair but are welcome to do so if they want.

Misc:  this is entirely optional and up to each individual business, but it was suggested to me by an organizer of a similar event -- think about if you want to offer any discounts during the last 20-30 minutes of the fair. If so, you may want to plan ahead with signs that you can put out at that time. Again, everyone please do what you feel is best! Plan ahead for what to do if you sell out. Do you need to have a sign prepared? Will you take orders? 

Etiquette:  please be mindful and respectful of your fellow Kidpreneurs - no wandering salesmen! This means please don't walk around the room announcing sales, asking people to come shop with you, or stopping people and asking if they would like to buy your products (especially if they are at another Kidpreneur's table). Thank you!

Check out:  We are scheduled to stop selling at 2:30 pm. Kidpreneurs must stay until this time, even if you sell out. After that, you can start packing and cleaning up your area. Please check out with us before you leave! I will also have a short survey for you to fill out at the end of the event. One of the questions will be how much you made in sales that day - total sales, not profit!
