Students really appreciated the educator being in the world of the student, whether that was understanding what TV shows they watched or whether it was truly listening and responding to the student requests. And conversely, the worst learning experiences were when education was not pitched appropriately to the students or the educator appeared to be more self concerned, unengaged or didn't want to be there.

My perspective focused on understanding the desired attributes of teachers from a student’s perspective. In summary:

Engaging students and empowering learning have a lasting impact on student’s experience – For example, having the significance of learning explained by relating real-life experiences, goals and expectations, creates learning outcomes that are meaningful for students.

Organisation and clarity are important to student success. Passion, good attitude, desire and intention to teach, as well as a caring and empathetic nature are desirable qualities of a teacher. This is also displayed by being mindful of student’s needs – making time and taking time.

This re-inforced the benefit of developing in-class relationships between student/teacher and student/student. Learning doesn't happen in an emotional void. Also, I noted that students appreciate having a class plan or similar so they know what is coming up.

It probably shouldn't be a surprise, but a lot of the feedback from students seems to revolve around a good lecturer being generally approachable and relatable. I will need to keep this in mind and not get so caught up in the content that I skip the basics of being welcoming and friendly.
