A great way for readers to learn about colors or how to write letters. Ideal for grades PreK-1 due to the basic ideas such as colors and using crayons.

This Caldecott Medal winner is a sweet, simple book in which a child is repetitively told no by his mother. This book is great for young readers that are learning what "no" means the hard way, and learning that their parents love them even though they say "no!" The simplicity of this book is perfect for PreK and Kindergarten. Slightly complex due to narrow focus, simple sentences, and understanding.

This is a comical book about a girl who refuses to brush her hair, no matter how much it gets in her way. This book constantly uses rhymes and is well suited for grades 1st and 2nd, in which kids are in the process of becoming good readers. This is an ideal book to use to get readers to try and pick out the rhyming words out of sentences while practicing their reading skills. This book is mainly slightly complex, with a few moderately complex elements. These include figurative language and vocabulary.

Quiet is a simple book that explains how calming and peaceful it is to just be still. This is a seemingly perfect book to read to students that just can't quite realize how lovely things can be when all is quiet and still. I would use this book in any classroom because it may even just be a good stress reliever to read at the end of the day. This book is suited for grades PreK-2 due to its simplistic nature and minimal text. Quiet is simply complex due to its sentence structure, vocabulary, and purpose.

Stumpkin is an inspiring story about a pumpkin that no one wants for a jackolantern. This book is very fitting for a fun read aloud activity around Halloween time. Students could even design their own jackolantern after reading it! This book is most fitting for grades K-3. Stumpkin is moderately complex due to more complex sentence structure, conventionality, and vocabulary. Students may also be a little confused by the idea of a jackolantern if their families do not celebrate Halloween. Younger students may need assistance with reading the longer sentences and some of the more advanced vocabulary words.

Americans is a book that conveys the complexity and unity of being an American. It explains the different qualities that Americans have and ties them all together by saying that they are what make Americans in the end. This would be a great book to read at the beginning of a unit on American History, as it touches on events in America from its founding to now. This book is most appropriate for grades 3-5 because it conveys many deep historical ideas that need context to be fully understood. This book is very complex due to its purpose, vocabulary, subject matter knowledge, and intertextuality.

A fun read about a child imagining what her life would be like if her family were different animals. This book would fit perfectly into a science curriculum that gets into the beginnings of animal group naming. The grade level for this book is PreK-2. Some of the collective nouns may go right over younger kids heads, but it is still a fun read about animals for any child. Once students reach an older age, they will not have many problems reading and understanding this book. This book is moderately complex due to use of graphics, vocabulary, and subject matter knowledge.

This book could be used in a classroom to teach a lesson on the importance of being kind to others. If used for a read aloud, the teacher could ask the students what they think is going on in each picture since there are no words to explicitly say it. This book is meant for grades PreK-2, which seems very appropriate, as this is a time when every student should be learning how much lives can be positively impacted by simple acts of kindness.
