The U.S. government showed the public posters, political cartoons, and articles to help turn them pro-war. The biggest worry of the government was public unity. So as a way to get rid of this worry, President Wilson created the Committee of Public Information. The committee was there to help sort through all the damaging information that would cause the public to support the non-allied powers. The propaganda came in many forms, as posters, songs, radio, parades, news, and movies in order to try to sway the opinions of the public. There were emotional appeals, demonetization, and dishonesty used to help the propaganda.

In 1917 British cryptographers decoded a telegram from German foreign minster Arthur Zimmerman to the German ambassador to Mexico that proposed a German-Mexican alliance in case of war between the United States and Germany. In the telegram, Germany offered financial aid as well as the promise of restoring lost Mexican territories of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona in the exchange for their alliance. When England found out about It they then released it to the United States. On February 26, when Woodrow Wilson found out it drew America closer to war.

In 1914, Russia, a nation divided over basic principles necessary to function, a nation stuck in an economic crisis that needed to be resolved, was flung into the devastating war that was WW1. The war was the beginning of the end for Tzar Nicholas the Second, who was becoming increasingly unlikely as conditions on Russia worsened for the lower class, while the upper class of aristocrats and Royal family lived lives of luxury. There was a long history of struggle in Russia, against the injustices and corruption of the Russian system, in which Russia was ruled and governed by one Tsar. The increasing animosity in Russia forced Tsar Nicholas the Second to alter the current system of government. In 1905, Tsar Nicholas the Second reluctantly agreed to the formation of a State Duma, or National Assembly. The Duma’s power was extremely limited and the compromise pleased neither the Tsar, nor the reformers.

^As Uncle Same is pointing his gun at Germany while he is trying to set out another U-boat, this cartoon says that the U.S. is trying to stop the U-boat problem.
After the war, Wilson got the Freedom of the Seas as the second of his 14 points for his peace treaty. But, Great Britain didn't want to join any international treaty that negated the supremacy of the Royal Navy. Along with Great Britain recognizing that it was a big part of bringing down Imperial Germany with their blockades of neutral ships. The blockades, however, were not effective because instead of blocking the entry and exits at the German ports, where they were stationed, the ships were in the North Sea and The Downs where traffic to the continent was easily controlled. Wilson was making his Peace Agreement saying that Britain and Germany were both at fault for bringing down neutral ships.
Germany was scared of the U.S. joining the war because they knew that the U.S. was a strong power, and Germany attacked ships with the U-boats and then backed off for a little over and over again. They apologized every time they attacked a ship, until they decided on unrestricted U-boat campaigns.
Below shows a recap of the U-boats attacking other ships, showing footage of what happened, also explaining why the U.S. got involved with the war, based on this effect.

In August of 1914, Russia officially joined WW1. The war was a disaster for Russia, for both the people who were left starving and sick on the streets and Tsarist Russia, who were blamed for the catastrophe. On the 5th of September 1916, Nicholas the Second became the army's commander-in-chief and was seen, to many, as the sole man standing in the way of government reform. Nicholas was so despised by the people of Russia that his German born wife, Alexandra Feodorovna, was thought to be supporting Germany. Nicholas’s entire family was said to have fallen under the spell of a Siberian, Grigori Rasputin. On the 30th of December in 1916 Rasputin was murdered by Russian aristocrats, possibly with assistance from British police. The aristocrats murdered Rasputin in an effort to end his influence on Nicholas the Second, but for many, the damage had already been done.

On the 23rd of February thousands of Russian women walked the streets of Petrograd, the Russian capital, in protest over bread shortages. The following day the protesters were not only women, but also workers and students who were also displeased with the current situation in Russia. The protesters carried placards that read, “Down with the Tsar.” Nicholas the Second ordered troops to put down the protest, but instead the the troops mutinied with the women and workers. Tsarist officials were arrested, police stations were attacked, and anything that resembled the Tsar was destroyed. Tsar Nicholas knew that the only way to restore order and peace in Russia would have to resign, and so he did. On the 2nd of March Tsar Nicholas the Second officially abdicated.

In World War 1, the US was neutral for quite some time. The US may not have been in the war until 1917 but that didn’t stop them from supporting the allies in the war. The Germans didn’t like this, so they started doing U-Boat attacks. The economic ties were a lot stronger with the Allies and the Central Powers. The US trade with France and Britain was more than double the amount of trade with Germany before the war. The majority of the US favored the Allies even though some favored the Central Powers. Once, the US declared war against the Central Powers trade with them went down. Trade with the Allies however rose from 1.479 billion to 4.062 billion dollars. The US loans to the Allies helped them get weapon equipment, food and needs for their soldiers. The US loans to the Allies were vital in winning World War 1.
Below shows the loan rates and amounts of different countries.

Peace! Land!” As Russia economic issues grew so did the Bolshevik party, almost exponentially.

On the 25th of August, the Russian general, Kornilov, led his troops not toward the central powers, but instead toward Petrograd, because he believed that Russia’s war efforts were being deliberately sabotaged by people like Lenin. The Bolsheviks managed to defend the city, with the help Trotsky, who was released from jail. Strikes by the workers prevented Kornilov to transport his troops by railroad and his troops began to give up. Following the Kornilov affair, the Bolsheviks had officially gained a majority in the Petrograd Soviet and in October Lenin returned from Finland to Petrograd and immediately began plotting to seize power. On the 25th of October the bolsheviks officially gained control of the Capital through military force. The Bolsheviks were officially in command of Russia and therefore in charge of its government. The Following day Lenin officially overthrew the Provisional Government.

In November of 1917, the Russian Civil war began, as not all Russian citizens were aligned with the Bolsheviks. These counter-revolutionists, or white Russians received foreign support, as America was and is anti-communist. Many counter-revolutionists hoped to put Tsar nicholas the Second back into power. These hopes were soon shattered as Nicholas, his family, and 4 of his servants were murdered in the cellar of the Governor's mansion in Yekaterinburg, Siberia. By the of 1921 Russia’s brutal Civil war officially came to an end, claiming the lives of 2 million, the Bolsheviks had won.
On the 30th of December, 1922, following the defeat of Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union was created, but Russia would always remain a single party state, no matter its name. Russia would never be a country of democracy as reformists had hoped during the Russian revolution.

Great job! Quite an extensive treatment of very complicated events in Russia. It seems that Wilson totally miscalculated who would hold on to power in Russia. He probably should have followed GW's advice and kept out of the internal struggles of Russia.
