Math Olympiad Online Course (Phase 1)

Name: Ong Zhi Zhung

Matric Number: A182841

Date: 12 June 2023 - 9 July 2023

2. What have you done?

During the first few weeks of my elective posting, I focused on the initial phase of the project, which is the design of the curriculum and preparation of the course learning material.

Details:

- I have finalised my target students as 11-19 years old, where the course will assist students in improving their knowledge in Math Olympiad and preparing for various competitions, including the International Mathematical Olympiad National Selection Test (IMONST) held every September.

- I have finalised the 10 topics to be covered in this course, which include algebra, number theory, combinatorics, geometry, etc.

- I have sorted out and collected some good Math Olympiad questions from competitions like IMONST, KMC, SASMO according to the 10 topics I planned to include as practical examples for students.

- I have started drafting the learning material. My target is to complete a ≈200-page e-textbook by the end of the project.

3. Points to remember from week 1 (Phase 1)!

1. Be Organized:

By thoroughly planning each phase in advance, I gained a clear roadmap of what needed to be done, which helped me stay on track and ensured a smooth flow throughout the course creation process. Besides, I realised that creating the course outline and identifying the 10 topics to be covered early on provided a clear guide and direction for preparing the learning material efficiently.

2. Be Open-Minded:

Initially, I tried to create the learning material from scratch, but I soon realised the value of being open-minded. By exploring existing Math Olympiad books and references, I gained valuable insights into how other educators structured their content, arranged topics, and presented ideas. This approach not only provided inspiration for my own course material but also expanded my knowledge in Math Olympiad, further enhancing the overall quality of the course.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
I felt excited and motivated to start the project. I can't wait to see the final product! Developing the course outline and learning objectives made me more confident in the direction of the project, and I am eager to move on to the next phases.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

Difficulty/Concern 1: Content Selection

Explanation: Choosing the 10 topics for the Math Olympiad course was quite challenging. Math Olympiad covers a wide range of topics, and I aimed to ensure the course covered all the most important knowledge that my students could apply effectively in their math competitions. Therefore, I had to carefully consider which topics to include in the course.

How I coped:

I addressed this challenge by extensively reading Math Olympiad books and online resources. This provided valuable insights into different topics and their relevance to Math Olympiad competitions, eventually helping me to select the 10 topics. To ensure a more comprehensive coverage, I grouped several related topics into single topics. For instance, I combined Triangle Inequality Rule, Regular Polygons, Pythagoras’ Theorem, Heron’s Formula, and Similar Triangles into a single topic, namely Geometry.

Difficulty/Concern 2: Topics Sequence

Explanation: Another difficulty I faced was arranging the sequence of the 10 topics. Initially, I intended to arrange them from easy to difficult. However, I realised that subtopics within each main topic themselves had varying levels of difficulty, making it challenging to determine an overall difficulty for the main topic.

How I coped:

To address this concern, I organised the subtopics within each main topic from basic to advanced, ensuring a reasonable progression within each individual topic. I then carefully arranged the sequence of the 10 main topics, considering the logical connections between them and whether prerequisites from one topic were required for another.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Organised, Energetic

7. Your plan for next week (Phase 2)
For the next few weeks (Phase 2), I will speed up my progress of preparing the learning materials. And then, I will move on to recording the lessons.

Name : Siti Nurliyana binti Mohd Yazid
Matric Number : A182078
Date : 24 July 2023 – 29 July 2023

2. What have you done
I began this first week by restudying the steps on how to make the banana chips with my mother.Since this was my first time selling the banana chips using my mother’s instruction, I hoped that the homemade banana chips would satisfy the customer.

Luckily enough, in the beginning of the project, I was able to easily locate and obtain matured banana, also known as ‘Pisang Tua’ fresh from the farm. I got 2 types of the banana which are ‘Pisang Tanduk’ and ‘Pisang Nipah’. Aside from the banana, I purchased enough cooking oil to fry the banana. Then, I tried to make a first batch of banana chips.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

Always learn and ask from the experienced people to improve something skill or outcome

When doing something important, especially if it is a large event, planning is essential because it allows us to be more organised and helps those around us.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
I was excited to start a business which had always been a dream of mine. Thus, I was grateful when this elective posting gave me an opportunity to try my hand at running a business. In the meantime, I worried if my business would not be well received. Do people want to buy these banana chips? That was my primary concern. However, I wanted to approach this as challenge and do my best.

5. Any difficulties / concerns? How did you cope?
In producing the banana chips, I think the peeling process gave some difficulties to me. It took a lot of time to peel the banana. This type of banana had a hard banana peel and it was extremely sticky. I needed to use the knife and wear the glove to peel the banana. I had to change the gloves twice as the banana was too sticky. As time passed, I adapted and discovered the proper technique for peeling the banana.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Exciting and Curious

7. Your plan for next week (Week 2)
To produce a promotion poster or promoting the banana chips, I need a picture of the banana chip itself. Since I already made the first batch of banana chips, I plan to find a suitable packaging and then take a nice picture to promote the banana chips. Then, I would like to find any suitable platform with targeted customers to promote this business.

Small Gateway to Sweetness: Dessert with A Touch of Natural Flavor (Week 1)

Mohd Zulkarnain bin Zainal Abidin
A180421
3 July 2023 - 7 July 2023

2. What have you done?
First week has been a very productive and nice moment to go through, honestly!

Following the feedback given by Dr Ekram on my elective posting application, where Dr mentioned about "Business Model Canvas", I recalled that we, students, have taken up one special course that taught us basic entrepreneurship skills previously. Hence, I started my elective posting by reviewing the past study materials, added with countless reading materials and videos available on the internet, to further prepare myself in ways to start a small business, basic accounting skills, and many more.

In that time being too, I watched many videos, and I would like to call this as a mini-research, mostly about popular recipes on YouTube to keep up with what kind of desserts are trending currently, and to come out with a list of materials and ingredients needed for the desserts production. Without delaying much, to the store I go! I went to the nearby mini-market which was just few steps away from my house! And that would cut the fuel cost, am I right?! Well, wait till I mention that I do not have to spend money on fruits as my family allowed me to get them from the family orchard FOR FREE!

After enjoying many insights from the internet and the tips received from my family members for 3 and a half days, I started making the desserts; "Dadih Mangga Asli" and "Puding Jagung Berkrim", as a trial initially which then led me to get orders from my neighbors after giving them some free samples. All praise to Allah, I ended my first week of elective posting after selling 50 items on the last day.

3. Points to remember from week 1!
A - Enjoy the basics
I must admit that before starting this entrepreneurship project, I was a bit hesitant if I truly needed to start from zero or just produce the items by following my own guts. Now I believe it was the right thing to do; start by learning the basics. The reason being, it prepared me very well especially when it helped to cut cost by, for example, I do not have to buy new kitchen utensils or accessories and instead just use whatever is readily available at home. Also, it helped to reduce confusion as a beginner, mostly in regards to calculating the costs for dessert production. Once I enjoyed going through the basics, it was not that hard to start this mini-business.

B - Family will always be there for you!
I must say, luck is with me this time since I have majority of my 8 siblings and parents at home, explained by the recent Eid Adha celebration, hence, is a holiday for most. This actually eases my first week journey even more because I got to ask for their opinions at any time, added with their endless support, making me confident to proceed with my work without much doubt.

C - Time management is still the key
Having to work after a long holiday, I would not deny that I needed some time to adjust with this elective posting due to being too comfortable doing nothing much for few weeks. Because of that, I ensured to fulfill the daily 8-hour requirement by keeping a track of my gadgets' time screen and tried to do multitasking to be more productive. Guess what, I honestly thought that I would just spend the first week learning the basics, but I proved myself wrong by going out to buy the ingredients and starting the sale concomitantly.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
To be frank, I even thought of changing my elective posting project to learning musical instruments like the guitar and electronic keyboard because I was sure I would have to face many problems with this entrepreneurship work. But now, I am much thrilled to continue doing this Small Gateway to Sweetness project, believing that I can definitely do it smoothly, In Shaa Allah.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
Choosing the suitable item for dessert production
At the mini-market, I took some time to survey and compare prices of ingredients of different brands muchly because I was not surewhich one to choose for a pleasant dessert taste. Without much problem, I called my siblings at home to ask for their opinions, and they suggested me ones that they usually use before. I am sure grateful for their help! Apart from that, I do not have other difficulties in this first week.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Wonderful and Sensational

7. Your plan for next week (Week 2)
In Shaa Allah, I planned to start selling desserts at the village marketplace and work on the sales report to be submitted at the end of this posting. In hope to have everything going well, I will try to sell them at the nearby mosque too.

What have you done?
For week 1, I have taken orders for cinnamon rolls thrice, on Sunday, Tuesday and Saturday.
For sunday, i have made 21 boxes and delivered them to my customers.
27 boxes on Tuesday and 42 boxes on Saturday.

I made the cinnamon rolls in the morning from 6am to 11am. I delivered them by my own car around Sungai Petani area at 2pm till 5pm. Some of them also chose the pickup option at 12-1pm before I go out.

On Saturday, i took 42 orders as I wanted to try to step out of my comfort zone. Usually I could make 21 boxes comfortably myself. However I have gotten high demands on Saturday for the cinnamon rolls, so I gave it a shot. I could succesfully finish doing all boxes, it’s just that I had to go out to deliver them a bit later at 3pm. Considering the traffic around my neighbourhood is smooth, i could wrap things up at 6pm.

Another thing is, I have received an order for a box of cinnamon rolls and creampuffs for a solemnisation ceremony on Saturday too. I hesitated but eventually I took it.

3. Points to remember from week 1!
- Making cinnamon rolls requires patient as it requires about 3 hours for each batch.
- Baking ingredients are expensive hence work must be done meticulously so no ingredients are wasted.
- Good rapport with customers can ensure that they will repeat our products again.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
It was really fun and exciting. I was also scared if my cinnamon rolls did not taste good or failed while baking. I was curious as to what my cinnamon rolls tasted like so for the first time, I did a whole batch to give it to myself, family and friends and it tasted divine!

I am happy that I have received good feedbacks from my customer and even interest for the next upcoming orders. It made me feel more excited to bake the cinnamon roll although I get super exhausted at the end of the day.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

I realised how expensive baking ingredients are nowadays. I was quite confused as to how much I should sell them as I am afraid others would find it quite expensive After making a few surveys around my neighbourhood, I have decided to go with RM 12 per box. I did not want to reduce the quality of my cinnamon rolls hence i used topnotch ingredients.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Great and exciting.

7. What have you done?
I started my very own baking business and it was a dream come true to turn my love for baking into a profession. As I set up my business, I focused on taking orders from customers and selling my delicious baked goods.

I planned to focus on selling Cadbury Cheese Tarts and Cranberry Scones for the first week. These two treats hold a special place in my heart, and I've been baking them for years, sharing them with friends and family who have come to cherish their delectable flavors. The recipes had been perfected through countless experiments and adjustments, and it was a delight to witness how much people loved them. I would lose track of time while kneading the dough, creating the perfect crust for the Cadbury cheese tarts and the tender crumb for the cranberry scones.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of this week was the response from customers who had tasted my treats before. The moment they discovered I had started a baking business, they excitedly reached out to place orders. Some even told me that my Cadbury Cheese Tarts are their family's favourite!

I eagerly look forward to what lies ahead in my baking business journey. What have you done?

The first week of elective posting has been very productive. As I have had the business for quite awhile, I already have most things figured out and handled, so I only have a few things left to settle.

The first thing I did was restock my ingredients and packaging materials. As I was doing so, I realized that almost all of them have increased significantly in price. Hence, I did some calculations to determine if I could maintain the price I had or if it was time to update them. After a lot of consideration, I decided to increase the price of my baked goods to maintain the quality of my products.

Before I took orders, I gave out some samples of my baked goods to family and friends to gather feedback and ensure the quality is still maintained. I then moved along to updating my customers on our social media about the price change and that we are open for order as usual! I also promoted my business through Instagram ads and food delivery groups. I was overwhelmed by the amount of response I gained.

I have been taking orders for brownies, banana cakes and burnt cheesecakes. So far, I had a total of 21 boxes ordered and delivered. I had orders for office gatherings, birthday celebrations and some were from repeating customers. I would bake them depending on the delivery time chosen to ensure they are freshly baked. I would then deliver them through Grab Express, but some customers also opt for self pick up.

3. I am also thankful that I finally have the time to pursue my love for baking and properly take orders again as the past year has been quite hectic. I am also thrilled that I still have the support of my existing customers even after a hiatus and gain new ones and that the feedback I received has been very pleasing.

5.

Name: Ganiya Saravanen
Matrics num: A180836
Date: 25th June - 1st July

2. What have you done?
For the first week of the elective posting, I was mainly learning my way around the business. We sell South Indian and Malaysian food and do pop ups in several markets and breweries. We had our stall at a buddhist temple on the 1st of July and so had to come up with a vegetarian menu. Since it was the school holidays here and there were free mindfulness and a Tai Chi sessions on that day, we expected a big crowd too.

We decided to sell Vegetarian Rice Meal Set, Masala Thosai, Sambar Vadai, Masala chai and also were introducing Poori for the first time. Before the day of the market, we had to buy the ingredients that were needed and also made sure that we had enough containers to serve the food.

Most of the work happened on the day of the market, where we had to wake up early and start cooking. We then had to set up the stall and I learnt how to set up the tent, the table, how do the card payments work and etc. At first it was a little quiet but as the day went on, more customers came and the Poori was a hit too! Overall, I've learnt a lot of the basics of handling a food business during my first week.

3. Points to remember from week 1!
• Hand and overall hygiene is very important while preparing food.
• Coming up with vegan and gluten free menus help attract more customers.
• Time management is very important. Since the markets start early, the food has to be prepared early in the morning and sleeping earlier the night before ensures enough rest.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
It was very exciting and interesting to see the amount of planning that goes into a food stall. We had to come up with a menu that would attract the type of people that would come to the temple market. It was nice to engage with people from different walks of life. There was an Indian man that was really excited when he saw that we sold thosais. He said that it was a happy coincidence and that he didn't expect that he could have a taste of home at a buddhist temple!

5. Any difficulties /concerns? How did you cope?
One of the difficulties that I faced was that I wasn't too familiar with the Australian coins. It was confusing because the $1 and $2 coins look pretty similar and I'd lightly panic when I had to give the customers their change. I coped by taking my time and learning what the coins looked like and with time it slowly got easier!

Another difficulty that I faced was that I was very nervous when interacting with customers. One of the main reasons was that I do have a little social anxiety and I was very aware that I spoke in a different accent. I decided that the only way to overcome it was to just face my fears and so I forced myself to interact with the customers and hey, it wasn't too bad when they were nice and smiled back too :)

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Challenging and exciting.

7. Your plan for Week 2
My plan for week 2 is to learn more on promoting the business on social media.
