The story is about a boy named Max who, after becoming a bit too rambunctious in his wolf costume, is sent to his room without supper. Rowdy Max’s imagination transforms how room into a new world. He travels across an ocean to a forest “where the wild things are”. The wild things make Max their King, and they hold a “wild rumpus”. Max becomes homesick, and despite desperate please from the wild things, Max returns home. I recommend Where the Wild Things Are for lower Elementary School children. The book is filled with wonderful illustrations, and descriptive language. Although some might believe that this story glorifies misbehavior, I feel that it is important to emphasize that Max eventually grows weary of being King of The Wild Things, and is welcomed back to reality with a hot supper. It is my opinion that children will be entertained by Max’s adventure in Where the Wild Things Are for years to come.

In the story, Farmer Brown’s cows obtain a typewriter, and learn to type. At first, Farmer Brown is bothered by the sound of the typing. But then, the cows begin leaving notes asking for electric blankets to keep them warm. Farmer Brown refuses the request and the conflict escalades. Soon, the cows and chickens go on strike, refusing to give Farmer Brown milk and eggs. The conflict is resolved when the cows offer to surrender their typewriter for electric blankets. In a humorous turn of events, the ducks, who had been mediators in the conflict, end up with the typewriter. This quick book has bright, colorful illustrations, and a repetitive “click, clack, moo” sequence that makes this book a great read-aloud candidate. Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type is a great book for lower Elementary school students.

Lonnie Johnson's Super-Soaking Stream of Inventions is written by Chris Barton and illustrated by Don Tate. This book would be better for your Upper Elementary students. This book is a biography about Lonnie Johnson. Lonnie Johnson is a young inventor in the 1960’s who has an interest in anything and everything that deals with engineering. Lonnie’s family is very supportive when it comes to him inventing new things. Lonnie is told that he wouldn’t be able to accomplish his dream of being an inventor. Lonnie went to a science fair with one of projects and received first place. That was the first time an African-American accomplished this. Despite what a silly test told him, he stuck with what he loved. When Lonnie graduated High School, he went to school to pursue his love. Once he graduated he came up with the invention of the “super soaker.” Lonnie went to many toy companies before he could finally get the “super soaker” going. He finally got his invention out, and in many stores. “Super Soakers” were all over the place, and are still a toy that many children enjoy today.

This book is about four different people’s experiences from the park. The “voices in the park” refer to the four different people’s perspectives on when they went to the park. Each character goes through what they did at the park, and what they experienced while they were there. The book focuses a lot on friendship, and it shows each person’s individual friendships and relationships in the park. The book shows each person’s new or already existing relationships that they have. Voices in the Park is a very simple read, and is a great book for Lower Elementary. This book would be a great tool for a read out loud with your classroom.

The book depicts the story of the original thirteen states of the United States of America. The main portion of the book is a play put on by a group of students. Each student plays the part of a state or important person. From the signing of the Treaty of Paris, 1783, to the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787. The majority of the text is in brief speech bubbles from the various characters. The format may be a bit more difficult for younger students, but most Upper Elementary students should be able to follow it adequately. The text is very brief, but expresses ideas sufficiently. The last few pages of the book contain an afterward, and a section titled “Notes”, that go into deeper detail and answer questions that may not be fully answered in the book. This book could be used as introductory material for Upper Elementary students learning the Constitutional Convention.

Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767 in the Colony of South Carolina. Just two years before he was born, his parents emigrated from Ireland. In 1765 his family set sail from Ireland, and landed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They bought a horse and wagon, and head South to the Carolinas. On March 9th, 1767, six days before Andrew Jackson was born, his father passed away from a massive heart attack. Andrew Jackson had two older brothers. After his father passed away, they moved in with his aunt. Andrew Jackson practiced with his bow and arrow, until he could become good at it. For his sixth birthday he was gifted with a popgun. His brothers and cousins taught him all his hunting skills, since he did not have a father to do that with. He attended the small academy at Waxhaw Church, only the brightest children attended this academy. When Jackson turned thirteen years old he enlisted into the Military. Before the Revolutionary War ended Jackson took part in several battles, and was captured by the British. Andrew Jackson was sixteen years old when the war ended. Both of his brothers died in battle. In November 1781, his mother passed away from cholera. Jackson taught school in Waxhaw, then in December 1784, he moved to Salisbury, North Carolina to study law. Jackson became a full-fledged lawyer when he was twenty years old. He served as Governor for the territory of Florida, and as the United States Senator from Tennessee. In 1828, Jackson was elected the seventh President of the United States. In 1837, Jackson returned to Tennessee, and died eight years later.

The fast-paced, unpredictable, humorous, and entertaining set of stories is a great tools for those students who need a stimulating piece of literature to hold for their interest. These “alternative” retellings of traditional, well-known fairy tales are easy and fun for a wide range of students. Since this book is so fast-paced, it is a very easy read. I think that a student who has a great sense of humor would love to read something like this. The book is not very educational, but not everything students read have to be. I think it is very important for students to find something that they enjoy reading in order to promote reading as a lifelong habit, not just something that must be done at school. If a collection of “fairly stupid tales” is what’s required for a student to enjoy reading something, then I am happy to keep this on my bookshelf.

I'm too scared."
"'Course you're scared. Anybody'd be scared. You just gotta trust me, OK? I'm not gonna let you fall, May Belle. I promise you.'" (Chapter 13, paragraph 21-22)

Jesse finally realizes that it is okay to be scared every once in a while, and tells May Belle that it is alright to feel that way. Throughout the book Jesse tries to be brave, but finally realizes that there isn't anything wrong with being scared of life. Jesse acts brave for May Belle in this very moment, and does what he can to help her through this situation.

I highly recommend The One and Only Ivan to your Upper Elementary to Middle Schoolers. This book is great for any students out there who have a strong love for animals. The book follows you along the life of Ivan, and all of his friends. The entire book is narrated by Ivan himself. This book will take you on a roller coaster of emotions, there are many highs in the book along with a few lows. This One and Only Ivan is also based on a true story. This book touches on the topic of the mistreatment of animals, and how we should be a little more compassionate towards them. This book is great for someone with a big heart, and a lot of love for animals. I think that this book would be a hit with your students, and I would love to keep this on my bookshelf for my students one day.
