Before the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964 Blacks had to fight for their rights. If there was a crime generally an African-American was suspected of the crime. Shops were segregated and Blacks would be punished in some way if they disobeyed the laws that were set up for them. If an African-American was to go into a store for whites only they would be kicked out or possibly arrested. African-Americans can only attend some schools. At a restaurant in Greensboro, North Carolina called Woolworths 4 college students took a stand at the lunch counter until they were served because they would be turned away for days. Some were arrested for trespassing and the original 4 were later served at lunch. `(“American Civil Rights Movement.”) (“Civil Rights Movement.”)

<del>
</del>

Monster is a book about Steve Harmon is a young African-American living in the Harlem section of New York. After the fatal murder of a shopkeeper Steve is the number one suspect when he is found on the scene of the murder. He is taken to jail and given a chance to fight for himself in prison and the courtroom. In court no one wants to listen to what he has to say because he is black and he is given no choice but to sit back and watch his own fate happen. He is cleared of all crimes after a back and forth decision by the jury. He is free and ecstatic about this. He proved that just because of your race you did not commit a certain crime. He still lives with racial prejudice. Things like people still thinking he did the crime. He still lives in a racially segregated community.

Steve is arrested mainly due to his race. The officers saw him on the seen and then suspected him of the crime. This happened in real life when people were arrested for protesting only because of their race. This all happened in a segregated shop as well. Segregated places were key components because it increased tensions and kept people from making peace with one another. Steve when he was brought into court was not given the freedom to say whatever he wanted to defend himself. When African-Americans were arrested they also were not given their freedom’s to defend themselves in court. Steve lives in the Harlem section of New York City which is where a lot of African-Americans in New York City lived.

How Topic Reveals America’s Coming of Age: It showed to everyone in America that differences do not matter. Just because of someone's race does not mean that they should be treated differently or as an outcast. After the Civil Rights Movement people were generally not segregated for their race still not everyone respected them. America came of age by banning the segregation of African-Americans and that made the country a more free place. America before was a placed riddled by racism. Before African-Americans had to live AGAINST white people and by the end of it they were living WITH them.
